Re: berlingo van in eco mode
They will be numbered inside the socket or on the connector most likely. In this example I have arrowed the designations - so these are referenced by Row and Column - so in some cases they will just a have a column Ref A, B C D..... and the number of the pin on the rows 1, 2, 3 etc

Re: berlingo van in eco mode
thanks marc. could you explain the tests in simpler terms please ? i have an electrical multimeter and a 12 volt test lamp but the multimeter is only used to measure the output of alternators and wouldnt know how to carry out a continuity check or how to check for shorts. Ive sent a picture of the grey 16 way connector from the under bonnet fuse box. Thanks again

Re: berlingo van in eco mode
Most modern multimeters have a continuity function / setting.
On the Alternator on the 2 pin black electrical socket, Pin 1 holds the Exciter wire. This goes to Pin 2 of the the Engine Fuse Box (2 Pin Black connector).
The output wire of the Exciter leaves the Engine ECU via the Grey 16 Pin Connector, on Pin 2 and goes to Pin 11 of a 40 pin black connector on the the BSI stored in the passenger side glovebox where all the internal fuses are also attached. Wheeler suggested checking the continuity of the exciter wire at each stage and for shortages anywhere.

Re: berlingo van in eco mode
Ok so you need to disconnect the 16 way grey plug on the under bonnet fuesbox and the 40 way black on the BSI
Identify the pins at both ends, set your meter to resistance & you should get less than an ohm reading when putting one probe at each pin.
once you have confirmed this reading is ok check the resistance between the chassis & one of the above pins (doesent matter which) you should get NO reading on this test.
Repeat again this time use the battery positive instead of the chassis, again you should have no reading.
The tricky bit here is probing the 40 way black connector, the terminals here are very small, almost like needles. The correct way to do it is with a 126 way breakout box & the correct adaptor. I'll assume you don't have this. I wouldn't recommend probing anything directly into this connector, they are very easy to splay the connections & cause problems. You can partially dismantle the connector & get to the terminal. It's a beige wire & the code printed on the wire should be 1087.

Re: berlingo van in eco mode
ok thanks very much. hope i get a result. im assuming that the leads on the mutimeter need to be long enough to place one on on each of the pins at the same time so may have to get some. Ignition on or off during the test ? and finally which setting does the multimeter need to be on to carry out the tests.

Re: berlingo van in eco mode
Use the 200 ohm setting in the 6 o’clock position from where it is now.
If your leads aren’t long enough just add some temporary wire onto the probes to extend them.

Re: berlingo van in eco mode
should the ignition be on or off ?
Re: berlingo van in eco mode
Sorry should have said, as you have the BSI unplugged the battery should be disconnected (following the correct procedure). Therefore the ignition needs to be off.

Re: berlingo van in eco mode
I can now confirm that the pins on the under bonnet fuse box are not numbered, and neither is the red plug. im assuming this is the case on the bsi end so unless you can supply me with wire colours and any identifying numbers i cant proceed. Thanks for your help

Re: berlingo van in eco mode
The plug is numbered. I can see, bottom left (as the picture is orientated) a "1", bottom right an "8", top left a "9" and top right "16". The numbers are on the grey surround.

Re: berlingo van in eco mode
As James correctly says, the numbers are marked in the corners of the grey plug that I have arrowed in yellow. The connector will only attach one way - so you know which pins will go where.

Re: berlingo van in eco mode
I’ve yet to see a connector yet on a PSA car thats not numbered, its nearly always on the plug rather than the components.
They may not be fully numbered (just like this 16 pin grey connector) but there will be enough numbering to work out the whole connector.

Re: berlingo van in eco mode
If you think that plug was hard to read you will deffo need your glasses on for the BSI 40 pin plug. The pic i’ve taken below is an injection ECU plug but will be very similar.
Across the way you can see the rows are numbered 1 to 4 across the way & A to H up and down the way. The pins on this plug wil be allocated A1, A2, D4 etc
