You, like me James, are actually doing the right thing by following the guidelines and going to work - though that doesn't sit well with a lot of people. Providing we keep up the social distancing (not a problem for me - I might see 2 people a day that I can talk to at a distance !), and follow the other guidelines, we're actually (currently) encouraged to carry on working if possible. The government guidelines are fairly clear....

"With the exception of the organisations covered above in the section on closing certain businesses and venues, the government has not required any other businesses to close – indeed it is important for business to carry on."
https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... rom-others

More on their FAQ:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... nd-cant-do

Edited highlights:
4. Should I stay at home or go to work?
You may travel for work purposes, but only where you cannot work from home.
Certain jobs require people to travel to their place of work – for instance if they operate machinery, work in construction or manufacturing, or are delivering front line services such as train and bus drivers.

5. I’m not a critical worker and I can’t work from home. What should I do?
If you cannot work from home then you can still travel to work. This is consistent with the Chief Medical Officer’s advice.

6. How can I find out if my work is essential or not?
The government is not saying only people doing “essential” work can go to work. Anyone who cannot work from home can still go to work.

white exec wrote: 03 Apr 2020, 16:39 Only a very few VHS recordings left now*. Years ago we bought a Panasonic VHS↔DVD recorder, which can play or record either, or copy either way. DVD copy of a VHS tape is amazingly good, as all judder and instability is removed. Where a still (pause) picture on VHS is invariably dodgy, the same frame paused on the DVD copy is clean. Amazing!
I did have a brief flirt with this idea a few years back.
I have no need of it myself but my eldest daughter has a lot of recordings of her kids on VHS - thay had a Sony cine camera and I know she wants them transcribed.
May just look with renewed interest.

Unit is a Panasonic DMR-ES35V, Steve. User manual should be available online.
We did have two of the units; gave one to a friend in Northants.

:offtopic: :offtopic: :offtopic:
This thread is intended to be a lighthearted place where we can share ideas about occupying ourselves while stuck in lockdown. The last few posts have deviated considerably from that idea and strayed into the far more serious area of dealing with the virus. I fully accept that there are valid points to be made in that area but please start a thread called "Coping with the virus" or something similar and discuss those points there. This thread is meant to be a place where you can get away from the continuous discussion of those areas, which is flooding the media in every direction, and try out some of other member's suggestions!! Perhaps an administrator could set that up and move the off topic points there to get the ball rolling? :) :) :)

I decided to have a poke about in the loft and found my old scalextric set which is 56 years old. I brought it down and set about cleaning the track. The transformer is dead so I substituted my 12v soldering station transformer and managed to get 12V all round the circuit. Now to tackle the two Formula 2 cars, a Lotus and a Cooper and see if I can get some action!! :)

I did something similar and dug out my old 'Magic Clock' from the Science Museum and spent half an hour setting the date and time - and thought I'd programme it with a relevant message!

Today I have mostly been living the high life...... I changed the fuel filter and cleaned the MAF and cleared an engine fault on my truck. Once I'd recovered from that excitement I set about fault tracing the left hand electric mirror on my hair dryer. Turns out it was a nigh-on impossible to get to broken wire in the door. Cut the wire and bunged in a connector and hey-presto - a working mirror.... which went down went you pressed up, and vice-versa.... so swap the wires on the motor and all is good. I need a lie down now after all that exhilaration :-D

Tomorrow  I might paint the front of the house.... although I fear I might be peaking too soon as I might need to keep some jobs in the pipeline as this might go on for a while :?

Not quite as empty as you think...... about 18 months - 2 years ago I replaced a pair of wardrobe doors in the bedroom. I really ought to get around to replacing the other pair now
It's looking like a full schedule of DIY for me - painting the front of the house and putting up a pair of wardrobe doors is near enough a full year's quota of DIY. :rofl2:

Well I got both motors working but the tyres are cracked and brittle to the point of just spinning on the track so I shall order some tyres from ebay and have another go next week. Knowing my luck I won't get them until after SWMBO has returned and I'll have to put the track away again until I can go back to the man cave!! :( :( :-D

could you 'revive' the tyres with something like acetone, or petrol?

I had a go with brake cleaner and then gin but they were so cracked it was a lost cause so I have dumped them to stop myself wasting too much stuff on them!! I have got a couple of F1 cars somewhere which are only 25 or so years old, so they may be a better bet if I can find them :-D
