Oil in air-intake and weird sound - Partner 2.0 Hdi 2005

Post by TCDK »

I have a little oil in my air-intake system, and when accelrating, it sounds like "fake air" from the engine. If idling and reving up the engine, there is no sound.

I'm suspecting it's maybe a bearing in my turbo? Since it's only under load the sound is there. (And that should also could cause oil in the air-intake system?)

What else should I look for?

I recently had a lot of problems with the car - First a lot of errors on the EGR system with a broken EGR solenoid and after continious problems, I found a hole in a vacuum hose! It was replaced, and all problems went away - For 500km .........

Sounds as though you have a leak in the air intake system. Carefully check the pipes between the turbo output and engine inlet. Get someone to rev the engine while you look and listen in the engine compartment. I doubt that the turbo is faulty on a 2.0.Hdi.

I had the car on the lift today.

From the PCV breather tube that goes to the air-intake, there is a little more oil than usual.
And there was fresh oil on the engine-block towards the rear of the car. It looks like the oil come from a place in the air-intake, where there is like a 10cm rubber connection, assemblied with 2 pipe clamps/hose clips (around 50mm size)

It's hidden good up there, and is a very thight place.

Will the oil in the air-intake be able to produce this sound? Or is the sign of oil comming out from the air-intake a good indicator of a leak in the air-intake?

This would be the spot. It looks like the oil comes from this tube

Most TD's have oil in the intake pipes, not usually a concern.

Both of ours have (Citroen, Toyota) - a light coating along the length of the ducting, and the inside of the intercooler.

It's just more than usual on the outside of the engine.

I had a broken vacuum hose, and that should be able to cause more oil in the intake.
And after I fixed that, I drove for 200km and it started having this weird airflow noise. It's like it's less now, but still there. The airflow noise is ONLY over 2500 rpm - That's why I believe it's turbo related.

Could the air filter be blocked or loose? Or part of the intake or turbo hose/ducting/intercooler be vibrating/resonating?
Pressure on the output side of the turbo (and either side of the intercooler) is quite high.

Use a 'listenting stick' - long screwdriver, or length of wood - pressed against your ear, and the suspected component. Might help narrow down the noise. Alternative is a length of hose (less than 10mm bore), used in the same way, but careful with the sound level!

Airfilter is new. and I checked the intake as far as I can see.

Had it been a gasoline car, I would have sprayed ether along the intake pipe :)

We actually have a stethoscope - I can just take off the end-piece

The sound seems to be less and less.

I still haven't been able to reproduce it on the lift, and I don't have anyone to rev up the car, while I'm under it (social distancing all my life, took it's toll) :rofl2:

I gave the car a big wash and cleaning inside - Maybe that will help #-o
