So the title of the Barry Hines book retold in the film "Kes" is

A Kestrel for a Knave
but where does the phrase "A Kestrel for a Knave" come from?

Anyone heard of "The Book of Saint Albans" :?: published in 1486.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Saint_Albans
Not quite the right answer it does not include "a kestrell for a knafe" but a preceeding work did.

I wonder if our Hertfordshire correspondant has a well thumbed through copy of the "Book of Saint Albans" in his library? :-D

It is after all a "compilation of matters relating to the interests of a gentleman". :-D

I sense a poke in the side re the Book of Saint Albans. Sadly I have no such volume on my shelves, I don't think I qualify under the honourable members caveat! I can manage The Book of Watford or a tourist guide to Hertford but St Albans remains a mystery!! :-D

There are 13 correct answers of which you have 9 Neil plus a bonus for each of 2 questions giving you a "off the top of your head" score of 11/13. Very good and obviously no point in submitting a researched answer as anyone can do that! :-D
