I think it would be better to list the individual problems and allow members to comment - as although these engines are fitted to a number of PSA vehicles, there can be associated problems that present differently from vehicle to vehicle due to different systems fitted to different models.

I understand GiveMeABreak,

Please let me expand.

I’m seeking with urgency, a fellow member of the community, that will take a look at the engine & assess it.

Someone that really knows this engine inside out & that is well versed in its unique characteristics.

I am based in Bracknell (Camberley) & am willing to travel far. The whole of Greater London & most of Southern England is doable.

I am based in Bracknell/Camberley (Surrey).

(It’s looking more & more likely I will be undergoing a significant medical procedure in order to help another. Hence the urgency).

You still haven't expanded much, can you give a description of the problem with the engine?

As you're in the Bracknell area and in need of urgent assistance why not have a word with Mark at https://www.ptsdevelopments.com/ in Wokingham. He runs a Citroen/Peugeot garage single-handedly and has a great reputation.

I'll pop by and see him. Appreciate the suggestion.

In case he's booked up - can anyone recommend anyone else.

In fact - I'd be willing to travel quite far to have the engine assessed by someone that really knows this specific engine inside out.

I'm looking for someone that really knows them well.

I'm grateful for any help fellow members can provide.

Okay - here are the details:

So - it's all been leading up to this...

July 2018 - £20 petrol accidentally put in 1.6 HDi. Drove 10 miles - topped up £40 shell (premium) diesel. Kept it topped for a long time. Recently - white smoke & foul smell from exhaust periodically. (No mayo under oil filler).

Guessing - full service was necessary:

Oil + Filter (Cabin filter, transmission oil, Air filter).

I'm asking for your guidance & wisdom here. This is the only car this family of five have - it's our only lifeboat.
It's getting me from interview to interview - there are no alternatives for us - if it suffers severe damage (economically).

A) If I start the car straight away - loads of unburnt fuel out the back. Smelly white smoke. Engine shakes like it wants to shake apart.

B) If I prime the car for 15 min and only then turn her over. It stutters, chugs, a little white smoke but then idles roughly (like its congested) without the clouds.

But I still have to leave it for 10 mins to warm up before the thermostat opens and she’s driveable.

If I try and drive her straight away / there is so much resistance and the engine noise is screechy.

She has been kept on the road like this for about a year and a bit. She is driveable but needs a full 15 min priming & 10min warming Each time.

I did do a basic service a year ago- but the fuel efficiency has steadily dropped. The engine sounds more and more congested.

I am asking the community to put me in touch with someone that knows these engines inside out.

I’m asking for help.

Location: Greater London & Surrey. I am willing to travel far.

When the £20 of petrol was accidentally put in how much diesel was there in the tank? i.e. was sort of percentage mix was there?

When the £40 of diesel was put in did that fill the tank up? Do you know what the tank capacity is by any chance?

If the car has now done 80k miles how many of that is since the petrol was put in two years ago?

The mix was very poor - about 50/50.

However - she’s still running and does motorway mileage. I just never take her above 55mph.

Tere has been a slow gradual degradation. It’s getting to the point where I can see this coming winter - it’ll be too much.

Hence I’m seeking someone that really knows and understands these engines - inside out. I think she can be saved - as her pull is good - and on the motorway she’s smooth.

She sounds congested though - and chugs a lot at start up. Once she’s warm - I can start her easily. Even if it’s two hours later and warm outside.

It’s when she fully cools down - that the long procedure to get her running has to be restarted.

I was paying £1.28 - £1.30 per litre for diesel back then. I would guess that petrol was about 5p a litre cheaper. That would mean about 16 litres of petrol. That would make, say 32l of mix. Take two litres off that for the 10 miles travelled and then £40 (about 31l) of diesel put in. That would make a rough percentage of 75/25 from that point.

I'll be honest, it does not look good. Diesel fuel oils the internals of the pump and injectors and this reduced lubricity could have caused wear on both of these.

When I accidentally filled the tank of our Citroen Xsara with petrol (about 44 litres!) in September 2015 I didn't start the engine and pushed the car to one side. With the help of an electric scavenge pump that my brother had I sucked as much of mixture out of the tank as I could and then filled (44 litres) it to the brim with diesel. I reckon we got away with it as we ran that car for another 12,000 until we got a replacement car 12 months later.

It would be really good for you to get the error codes read on the car. This would help to focus on where the problem(s) lie. You never know, it might be something else. That doesn't mean there's less chance of it not being serious though!

Just for info, when I did this years ago on my Xantia 110 DW10ATED HDi, the car got progressively worse (I wasn't aware at the time as Tesco changed their pumps and I used the wrong colour). Realising something was not right, apart from the smell of petrol being the dead give away I went straight to my mechanic. Despite having the tank drained and cleaned and refilled with diesel, the following week it just got worse. The damage was done. It kept cutting out, coughing and spluttering.

Ultimately, I had to have a new in tank fuel pump fitted as the system was contaminated, Once I had this done problems stopped.

I do know that modern Diesel common rail fuel system components are very sensitive and petrol is not very forgiving! It is possible that damage has been done over time....

That's exactly how it happened with me at Tesco's. They changed the pumps and then put the hoses back in a different order. I mean, what idiot puts the diesel hose in the middle of two petrol hoses?

The petrol I had put in didn't go to waste though. I was able to use it in our sit-upon mower in France. It did smoke a bit and I found it best to dilute the mix with even more fresh petrol to reduce the problem.

:rofl2:

Well at least you found some good use for it.

I'm also glad it's wasn't just me regarding the Tesco fiasco. I'm normally very aware, and couldn't understand what happened until I went back to the same place and realised what had happened. I never went there again.

I did it but the other way round, always used tescos for my car ,went to a local garage for some petrol for a boat and stuck 5l of diesel 2 stroke mix in it, when it was drained and purged, started it on the drive with a hose pipe up it and blimey...lost the neighbours...and the road.

Oh and Andle, keep your posts as one and give a much detail as possible, including cock-ups, you'll get a better more thorough response.

Damn right. I'm not going to let £43 worth of petrol go to waste!

Anyway, enough off-topic. Back to you, Andle.
