Track Rod

Unread post by froggy »

Hi, my S1 Xantia, the track rod end threads into a bar with a ball joint. I need to replace this part as there is wear on the ball joint. how do you undo it ? guess there is a Citroen tool for the job ? cheers Terry.

Terry,

I presume the steering rack is on the car, If so you will need to remove the rubber steering gaiter, stop the ball joint on track rod from moving and unscrew it from the rack.
There are tools to remove track rods which universal and don't cost that much.

I did mine on a S2 Xantia without the tool several years ago.

If you can get hold of one the right size I have found an Aston Super Wrench will grip pretty much anything. I had to replace a drop link, but the ball was spinning (and there was nothing to grip to stop this). I got it out of its' 'socket' and used one wrench to hold onto it, while I tried (and succeeded) to undo the nut with a long spanner.

My recollection is that on a Xantia, there is not much clearance for a tradtional wrench, and if they are tight, you cant get enough force without a dedicated tool such as https://www.amazon.co.uk/FreeTec-Univer ... B076H343JK or https://www.amazon.co.uk/neilsen-CT3182 ... 7WQA5DEDTK
Note that these tools come in different sizes and you need to check which one you need before ordering.

Those "super wrenches" are good, I bought a set of something very similar at a show many years ago - although I never found a use for 2 larger ones, which I permanently lent to a friend.

I replaced the trackrods on the C15 very early on, so assuming all Citroën track rods are similar, you shouldn't need anything special. Can't remember what I used but as it's unlikely there's room for Stilsons, I must have used a Mole wrench.
