You can't get a bigger tidal bore than the Severn Bore down here

Strictly speaking, the Bore is not a wave. A wave is a pressure difference propagated across a medium. The medium doesn't move with the wave but just up and down. Think of a Mexican Wave in an arena. The people involved just stand up and sit down or put their arms up and down. They don't move from seat to seat.

The Bore is different as it's a rush of water from the sea which overcomes the flow of the river temporarily. The proof of this is that the Bore water is salty. If you'd care to go and taste it, that is...

Shame to leave tidal, which has immense potential for generating energy, to get our hands dirty.

I will have to look it up but I had heard they were opening a coal mine in Cumbria.

My first thoughts were....yes I see what they are doing there dig some big holes and transfer the waste currently being "pooled" literally at Sellafield in 60 year old ponds, and dump it down the mine after a token amount of coal has been extracted.

Better go and get the facts and excuses.

Well its West Cumbria Mining......and its developing a "World Class Metallurgical Coal Mine" (can't they just call a mine a mine), and its got Government approval.

Anyone want to find out more?

Here's the link to read all about it, it would appear the mine is to get coal for steelmaking but how that differs from burning it in power stations I'm not sure!

Sorry, I didn't read Neil's post properly so you already have the link!! I'll just crawl back into my cave #-o #-o :-D

That's a relief, I thought I'd misread it :-D Might have to turn the cave into a metallurgical mine now then!

Back to Blyth and Catapult the The UK’s leading technology innovation and research centre for offshore renewable energy. We've all seen the wind turbines, but the tidal turbines may be just as revolutionary literally and metaphorically.

One of the proposals to both reduce emissions from domestic heating and to kick start a viable hydrogen supply industry, was to include a proportion of hydrogen in domestic gas supplies.

Well Keele uni have given it a go

This story, and its not dated April 1st, is the Oil Industry's attempt to produce "green Hydrogen"

Yes so what is the technique.....yes leave the oil in the ground and set fire to it.....hydrogen is extracted and the CO2 is retained deep in the earth.

www.sciencemag.org Company to harvest green hydrogen by igniting oil fires underground

Meanwhile over in the USA, another Oil Company Shell dabbling in Offshore Wind with EDP (ever heard of them? Energias De Portugal as it turns out) have produced record breaking low energy generation costs from their Mayflower Wind Project. It has been reported that the cost of electricity from Mayflower Wind will weigh in at just 5.8 cents per kilowatt-hour.

BP Carbon Neutral by 2050 says Bernard Looney new boss of BP

BP boss plans to 'reinvent' oil giant for green era

and.....
Shell have done a Video about their Net Carbon Footprint ambitions

Looks like the tree-planting business is going to get a boost from oil companies' carbon offsets.

I'm with Shell Energy for my domestic fuel.
This is one of the headlines on my bill.

100% renewable electricity, for 100% of our customers

Both petrol and diesel are sources of renewable energy...... It's just that it might take several million years to renew them :-D

It would be nice to see the embrionic Tidal Power developments, of which catapult at Blyth has been involved, get some massive investment, and turn into a major manufacturing development and installation industry for the United Kingdom. If it comes from the oil giants fine. as long as the first tidal turbine gigafactory is built in Northumberland :-D a case of YIMBY please.

So many firms are promoting that line, it makes me wonder where all the old style electricity is going.
