Peugeot 106 2001 airbag light

Post by pug106 »

Hi guys,
my airbag light came on after i removed the airbag of the steering wheel and lubricated the inside of the steering wheel with WD40..
Do i need to make some process to reset the airbag light or did i damage the circular connector of the airbag with the WD40?

Not a good thing to do! Apart from anything else WD40 is not plastic friendly....

I suspect you have sprayed too near the electronic connectors and this is causing problems. I suggest you disconnect the battery (always do this when connecting or disconnecting airbags), then wait 10 minutes for the airbag ECU control unit capacitor to discharge. Then take off the airbag boss carefully and start cleaning the connectors up with some electrical contact cleaner - NOT WD40. Clean up any traces of oil and allow to dry, then connect everything back up and cross your fingers.

I should've sayed that this happen about a year ago so i think it's a lost case and its really damaged..
Do you reckon it's still worth a try cleaning the connector and the circuly thing of the steering wheel airgab?

If the warning light only appeared after you sprayed WD40 in then that may well of been the cause. You don't have ESP on the 106, only ABS, so you don't have a steering wheel angle sensor to worry about.

It could of course be a coincidence - maybe you have another unrelated fault in the airbag system - but you will have to get it diagnosed with Peugeot Planet 2000 to see what the actual fault is if the clean up doesn't work. Over here in the UK we can't have any permanent warning lights on or the car will fail its annual test.

I've that steering angle sensor with the orange cable, and i spray that part as well.
There's any way to test the component without the Peugeot Planet 2000?

Not really, I need it in full (the VIN is automatically masked from public view when you submit your post) - only staff can see it as you can see ^.

That's not for a 1.1 injection as per your profile - that is for a 1.5 Diesel....

Right so as I said - you don't have a steering wheel angle sensor - that is only for vehicles with ESP - and you don't have ABS on this either. So the central 'cassette' mechanism is just to allow the steering wheel to be turned whilst maintaining the airbag electrical connections.

So it is likely you have saturated the airbag plug in oil spray that may be causing the issues.

As mentioned - disconnect the battery and leave for 10 minutes or so before giving it a clean up. Just be very careful and try not to touch the rotary mechanism - these can be hell to put back if they come out. Just clean up the contacts with special electrical contact cleaner - it may take a few attempts to get rid of the oil though.
