I think the concerns about national security and Huawei are real enough, listening to the experts.

PM is saying no-one else can provide this technology and so if Britain wants to go ahead with it, it has no choice.

Ericsson - a trusted comms partner - says it is operating 5G in several other countries. This seems to have been brushed aside, maybe because they are a European partner, and that just wouldn't do, would it?

In any case, with all the cutting-edge technological know-how available in Britain, surely this is a field in which we could simply take a world lead...? Er...er...well...er...

Maybe the fact that Ericsson have twice filed for bankruptcy and been 'restructured' in the last ten years has some bearing on the decision to leave them out.

The current status quo of global commerce is that companies can be bought/sold/acquired/taken over by any set of investors, from any country. So the Chinese actually own the strategic resource of every asset formerly held by Northumbrian water and its forerunner water companies. Yes no 5G involvement of Huawei near nuclear power plants, but a Chinese company is at the heart of the design and build of our latest Nuclear Reactors at Hinkley Point and if it gets going Sizewell. They already have the UK's nuclear power secrets....they probably wrote the software for them!

Bit of the Huawei V Ericsson debate. If a "not-Huawei" decision had been taken you would be left with Ericsson by default. It would be ironic if Huawei then made Ericsson shareholders an offer they couldn't refuse and swallowed them up!

Out of the mouth of the US Attorney General....

Attorney general suggests US take stake in Ericsson, Nokia to counter Huawei

Ericsson and Nokia shareholders could be getting offers thay cant refuse from others too!

Looks like all the silicon valleys in all of the U.S.A. do not have the ability to develop a 5G network without the help of the Swedes and the Finns.

5G's most marketable features, namely very low latency and high bandwidth, are mostly present in the millimeter wave class of 5G. That comes with some significant drawbacks, namely the range is a few hundred meters and any obstacle will break the signal. It's comparable to your home's WLAN or Wi-Fi, whichever nomenclature you prefer. The longer wavelength 5G is mostly an incremental improvement over 4G and won't be revolutionary.
IoT is tied to 5G mostly since it's a technology aiming to mature at around the same time. There's nothing inherently beneficial in 5G for IoT, if anything, the early chips will be inefficient and compromise the battery life of said devices.

Yep, can't possibly be seen to be selling out, or letting any Europeans in now that Brexit is done! No way. We will have to go with a begging bowl to the Chinese, Russians, Septics and more..

I'll clarify my last post by saying that in the context of the 5G thread, I was simply saying that the UK should be able to sort out 5G on its own - maybe not as quickly but we shouldn't be overly reliant on tech from other countries - especially where there are arguably some concerns over security.

These later posts have all gone way off on an increasingly heavier political / personal tangent so have been removed on that basis.

Although this is the Off Topic Chat Lounge - it doesn't mean anything goes.
