approximately 15000 KM ago I changed the transmission oil, I told the mechanic to also reset the oil wear counter, he said yes I did, well now I have diagbox and checked the oil counter which is 63232.
I believe he didn't reset it, I don't think the oil wear counter number 63232 corresponds to 15000 KM, am I right and to how many km does it actually corresponds to?
Should I reset it and what effects does it have when one resets it? And what effects if one doesn't?
ps. if anybody is so kind to also include advice for the diagbox procedure to reset it, it'd be very helpful!

Re: C5 X7 Oil Wear Counter
Resetting the oil counter is a procedure already contained in Diagbox - it is a guided procedure and tells you what to do.
Go into the AM6 Gearbox ECU or do a Global Test, then select it from the list when it finishes. The there should be several options - you will be looking probably at Repair or Pack Repair and finding the appropriate option to reset the Oil Counter. Follow the instructions - the procedure is not on paper outside of Diagbox.

Re: C5 X7 Oil Wear Counter
Yes. The whole point is that as the oil ages / burns / gets dirty, the gearbox ECU adapts it's operating mode through the software to account for this.
When the oil is changed, the counter needs to be reset, so that the ECU knows this and can adapt its programme accordingly. There will be some time needed after resetting the oil counter for the auto adaptives to adjust.
After the oil has been changed and the oil counter reset, you need to go for a drive and make use of frequent gear changes to ensure satisfactory gear changing quality (auto adaptives).

Re: C5 X7 Oil Wear Counter
In the workshop software manual under transmission section I read (sorry rough translation):
4. Transmission oil change
carry out the following operations :
- Learning of the adaptation of the electrovalves and oil pressure regulators
- Reset oil wear counter
I found and did the second operation, reset the oil wear counter, but how about the first operation (Learnig of the adaptation of the electrovalves and oil pressure regulators)? Is it included when you reset the oil wear counter or where is it in the diagbox because I haven't found it.
ps. frequent gears changes in automatic or manual mode?

Re: C5 X7 Oil Wear Counter
Yes, the adaptation programming procedure of the oil pressure solenoid valves and regulators can be done also at the same time - it is another guided procedure in Diagbox. Follow the instructions.
Just drive through all gears in automatic mode - basically a road test making sure you frequently allow the gear changes, both up and down.
Ultimately, if the oil counter has not been reset, you will end up with a the following fault code: P0298 - Oil wear counter fault - Value at upper limit and a message on the dash about a gearbox fault.

Re: C5 X7 Oil Wear Counter
what I meant is I found how to reset the oil counter in diagbox but haven't found the other procedure (oil pressure solenoid valves and regulators), is it maybe carried out when you reset the oil counter?
Otherwise can you point out where it is in diagbox?

Re: C5 X7 Oil Wear Counter
It should be an option there within the AM6 engine ECU repair pack options - I have a manual 6 speed - so can't help with the exact location as I don't have the AM6 ECU installed.

Re: C5 X7 Oil Wear Counter
I agree with Marc.
Cleared the counter on my C6 the last flush (of the five I’ve done so far) prior I had a very slight judder between second and third also between third and fourth gear. After the count reset the characteristics of the gearbox changed completely. And the judder was gone. Also it seemed like the gearbox was slipping after engaging 3 rd and 4th with the revs rising and slowly dropping again. Well that also stopped completely. Guess the counter reset is there for a reason

Re: C5 X7 Oil Wear Counter
cornesoutafrica did you just reset the oil wear counter or what other operation did you carry out with diagbox?
I did reset the counter...honestly no difference at all!

Re: C5 X7 Oil Wear Counter
Hi tredy.
Only different thing I did than doing a counter reset was to disconnect the battery. Left it disconnected overnight. I can’t remember why I did it though.
Besides that. Nothing.
Regards
Corne

Re: C5 X7 Oil Wear Counter
I was interested to discover that on the AL4 transmission that there was a graduated approach to resetting the oil wear indicator (1). When changing the oil, for each 0.5 litres added, the oil wear counter should be reduced by 2750 units. The counter has a maximum of 32958 units which correspond to 6000 hours of operation at an oil temperature below 95°C. So for a single change of about 3 litres the counter would be reduced by 16,500, approximately half the maximum value. An additional change some time later would get the counter close to zero, depending on how much it had incremented during the interval.
In terms of how many kilometres it would take to reach the maximum threshold, at an average speed of 30 km/hr it would take 180,000 km to rack up 6,000 hours, which probably sounds about right?
Obviously the later Aisin 6 speed automatic has a very different algorithm given the much higher numbers, in the millions, reported in this forum. It would be interesting to know if they adopted a similar staged approach to resetting the counter.
