I contacted Mathewsons, at present the car is listed at £2k....I gave them an offer, there is some movement but not much. It really did not reflect the lamentable spec/engine of this car despite its condition, I do not expect it to fly off the lot.Michel wrote: ↑26 Jan 2020, 18:53That's the stuff of nightmares!! Didn't sell at the December auction and overpriced despite its 21,806 miles and its "time warp" status. Can't be many buyers out there for that spec of vehicle. I expect it wont sell again at the Feb auction after which it may be open to negotiation.

I once had one as a courtesy car while my Activa was having work done. I was glad to get the Activa back as it was considerably cheaper to run!
Please can anyone suggest a Xantia replacement?

2k? They're only about 400% over what it's worth on a good day.
I do like the term "lamentable spec"..

They're paying 2k 3k for Allegros now so there will be a buyer who thinks this is a bargain somewhere.

Re: Please can anyone suggest a Xantia replacement?
The Allegro is very Retro Cool and often ripe for sleeper/big engine conversions, Xantia, not a chance. Dropping a powerful engine into one is reasonably easy.
TBH I am very surprised that Mathewsons do not realise this car will never reach the value they seem to have plucked from the air.
(I wait to be proved wrong shortly )

Auctioneers don't pick the price/reserve that's down to the vendor, auctioneers in my experience will sell to the highest bidder and take their commission and sod the seller if he can't be bothered to set a reserve.Stickyfinger wrote: ↑28 Jan 2020, 10:47 The Allegro is very Retro Cool and often ripe for sleeper/big engine conversions, Xantia, not a chance. Re: Please can anyone suggest a Xantia replacement?
I noticed one of the last 'E' model Vauxhall Cresta's in Matthewsons auction room on last nights programme. they must be very rare now. I had a '56 'E' model and the PA came out in '57 so they couldn't have produced that one for long. Very smart car.
Had a look round in there last year, some interesting stuff, they have a museum but it wasn't open. The man himself was wandering round with a notepad.

That might well be so, but (as far as I can make out) there are also far more parts common to both cars than those that are model specific, particularly consumables & routine maintenance items.

Re: Please can anyone suggest a Xantia replacement?
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. We explored them all, ruling out the Xantia, XM and Mk1 C5 because of spares issues. There wasn't a 406 within a 100 miles of us. The Octavia was a great choice but very difficult to find a decent one of the right vintage. Guessing people are hanging on to them. The Octavia seemed closest to the Xantia and we very nearly opted for a 1.8 high spec petrol version. Quadrupled the budget and checked out the modern Citroens but they just didn't appeal. Finally,, a week before the MOT ran out, we found a 2007 Saab 93 sportwagon with the 1.9 tdi engine , never had a DPF and 86k on the clock. Immaculate condition and regularly serviced. We bought it from a Saab 'dealer' within an hours drive who has an enormous stock of new and second hand parts along with a workshop so hopefully no ongoing problems with spares/repairs. HWMO happy cos he's had two Saabs which he was very happy with in the very distant past and and he thinks it drives similarly to our absolutely irreplaceable Xantia. Sad, sad day. MOT runs out tomorrow so we are off for a final run around!
