c5 2014 Hydractive 3+ tyre pressure monitor issue

Post by aiurfy1 »

Hello people, I am new to this forum also new to Citroen's in general. I have a 64 Plate C5 Exclusive with the hydractive 3+ suspension. It has been comfortable, but i wanted to add a little more comfort. So I purchased 4X 17 inch Exclusive alloys from a circa 2009 model. It was a straight swap from my OEM 18's to OEM 17's, but after doing this the car showed a fault sign saying " tyre pressures not monitored". I am making an assumption that the new wheels may not have TPMS inside them, Could I move the old pressure sensors from the old alloys to the new ones - or even purchase some new TPMS for each wheel. can someone shed some light on this or give me an opinion.
Thanks for helping this newbie in advance...

You would be able to fit new sensors to the wheels (although I cannot tell you how much this would be), but you will also need to get them activated. This will need the use of a Lexia/Diagbox system and something called an exciter. The Lexia is connected to the diagnostics port and the relevant menu is opened and then (following the Lexia instructions) the exciter is applied to each tyre. I cannot tell you any more than that, as I have not had to do this myself.

Oh, :welc: to the Forum as well.

you will have 2 issues:

First you can get the TPMS sensors moved from the old wheels to your new ones, but unless you know which sensor was on which wheel you will need the dealer to re-pair them.

If you done rant to do that expect to pay about £120 for each sensor module, plus fitting and coding. From 2014 there was a new system fitted in line with EU regs, so this has a different type of sensor, and module - so important you get the correct ones to be compatible with the system on your C5. If you put your VIN up I can confirm the ones you need, unless you are going to recover and get the ones refitted from your 18" wheels.

Next issue, is you will also need to let the ESP ECU know that you have changed wheel sizes from 18" to 17” wheels or you may get some ABS / ESP speed faults on the horizon. There is a setting in the ESP ECU, under 'Type of Tyre' that needs to be changed to the 225/55 R17 option.

The vehicles need to know what wheel sizes are on the car. The dealer can do this for you at the same time.

I believe that the BSI can accommodate eight wheels with their respective TPMS senders (to allow fitting of winter wheels and tyres in snowy climates) if you decide to get new senders. So, if you decide later on to put the 18" wheels you'll not have to recode them back in. Providing you've made a note of which wheel goes on which corner!

Yes but that's a separate requirement surely?

(A moment's reflection)

Ah, I think I see what you mean. You're saying that the BSI can't cope with eight wheels of two different sizes and you have to use a a Diagbox when chopping and changing between the wheels. I am right in thinking that the BSI can store the eight TPMI senders though so they won't need re-pairing each time, I think.

Yes, two Issues here Paul. I already covered them 2 posts ago in my main response, but as you then mentioned about if the OP decides to return to 18" wheels again, I just reminded him of the need to update the ESP ECU - again.

Nothing to do with the TPMS, but swapping back and forth the wheels of different sizes requires the ESP ECU to be updated each time to avoid ESP programme issues / speed faults.

As for the TPMS issue, without the VIN from the OP I can't answer that fully - as there was a completely different system fitted in 2014 and I don't know whether this affects the OP's C5 or not without this data. The revised system has more standard EU compliant transmitters and a different receiver. It may or may not support the additional tyre memorisation feature - I won't know until I have the VIN.

I distinctly remember a Diagbox section called 'Delivery of vehicle to customer' where the tyre size can be changed.

The options on the X7 were 17", 18" and 19" wheels. I assume this is used to calibrate the speedo and ESP.

I changed from 19inch to 18 inch with no rude messages. I just swapped the senders from the old to the new wheels. The only problem I believe is that the system may give me confusing advice as to which wheel is under pressure. Visual check should sort that out just as in the days of pre TPMS.

I must check to see what the difference in overall diameter of the tyres are. The car may be accelerating quicker or slower than before the change. I doubt if the difference is a life changing experience!

There won't be any warnings about this, as the system is pre-programmed for the wheels (standard or optionally bigger) fitted at the Factory, but it is standard procedure to do this if the customer orders new wheels at the dealership. As always, we strive here to provide the correct methods of doing things wherever possible to avoid issues in the future.

Yes, and you do it so very well (strive to provide the correct methods), but I was merely advising what the issue may be in this instance if you don't follow the correct procedure. I don't believe it is a problem if the reader is made aware of that just in case he/she does not have the benefit of the use of an appropriate diagnostic tool. They are not exactly thick on the ground in these parts either in personal use or independent garage use.

By the way, the difference in circumference between the 19" and 18" wheels for 245's is 756 revolutions to 755.

The main thing here is that this will also affect the mileage calculation & speed of the vehicle.... and moreso 16" to 18", 17" to 19".

But the thing is that there is virtually no difference!

I did the same calculations some years ago when I was looking at going down a size exactly as the OP is doing. I also found that the difference was less than 1/2 a percent. The difference was minimal between 17", 18" and 19" tyres however you measured it - turns per mile or tyre radius. ISTR that 16" wheels were an option and here there was a significant difference though.

I don't have the maths to prove it but my gut feeling is that difference between tyre sizes is actually less, or comparable with, a worn tyre compared to a new tyre.
