407 SW Wiper Blade Recommendations

Post by BadIdea »

Hi,

I've used aero-style blades for cars in the past based on forum recommendations, is there a particular type or brand that's popular for 407 SWs?

I've used Bosch before on all our C5 and they are useless. The best ever blades I have used are the ones from Citroen! They just work and don't squeak. They will be the same for Peugeot.

I'm glad you said that as I was looking at some Bosch ones thinking they'd probably be a good option. The ones I have at the moment are absolutely terrible, not sure what brand they are though. They judder up and down so much that I switch the automatic function off just so that I only wipe the screen when it's absolutely necessary.

Bosch wiper blades used to be great, until maybe 5-6 years ago when something changed and they became worse than Poundland cheapies...

I wonder, are the OEM items silicone based? Had good experiences with this type, they usually advise to switch the wipers on dry for a couple of minutes after fitting to deposit some silicone on the glass & then water tends to bead and run off easier as well. (Avoid RainX though IMO, I hate the stuff! It's fine if you're driving exclusively in pouring rain, anything less than full-on downpour I feel it detracts from visibility more than it helps).

Try giving the screen a really thorough clean with meths. Needs a bit of elbow grease and perhaps two or three goes.
A clay bar is said to work wonders too. Never tried that though.

Same trouble with Bosch.
Now using Denso blades (OE for Toyota, but available in all the standard lengths), and they are really good.

If you suffer from wiper judder with anything except very new blades, it's possible that the rubbers are getting "set" at an unhelpful angle when parked up or not in use, so that they "dig in" (rather than trail-sweep) when used. You can prevent this angled set by popping a wine cork under the arm, to lift the blade just off the glass, while it's parked up. Really works, although a little bit of a faff.

I've had success with Michelin branded wiper blades from Costco on my X7. They're sometimes on special offer as well. They don't seem to be the same as the Michelin branded blades that Aldi occasionally sell.

The rot seemed to set in with Bosch more than five years ago. I had a new screen fitted to the Xsara in about 2012 and fitted new Bosch blades. The driver's side blade scratched the new screen before I had time to become aware of the problem.

Thanks guys. I'll steer away from Bosch, then.

Have any of your heard of Heyner? German brand apparently, seem to get good reviews. Saw these on Amazon:

Well, I can recommend Heyner wipers for anyone needing replacements. Super smooth!

I remember when I got my X7 two and a half years ago I looked at wiper reviews and Bosch came out on top consitently. I invested in a pair of Aerotwins and I have to admit theyve lasted really well. I can see no point in changing them at the moment.

Are the Citroen genuine ones expensive Marc?

No, actually, I was surprised - they were cheaper than the Bosch ones, but I was so fed up with the squeaks and rubbing noises that the Bosch Aero wipers made - it was worse than death by a thousands cuts, so have only ever bought OEM ones since without incident, and stress levels have returned to normal.

The Bosch ones are £20 and £25 respectively at Halfrauds currently - so a fiver in it - and I usually get a discount at my dealer anyway of at least 10%.

But Citroen list for them is (C5 X7):

643737 (Right): £31.98 inc. VAT
643739 (Left): £24.02 inc. VAT

So £55 a set - but I've had mine for 5 years so far :-D

Fair enough, £55 does seem a bit excessive to me.

Thinking about it though, I got my set of Bosch wipers for about £20 for both.... so maybe they were counterfeit wipers that somehow were better than the genuine Bosch ones? :rofl2:

I know that Rain-X is controversial stiff, and that applications direct to the windscreen tend not to last, after which it can produce judder.
What I have been using, for three years now, is a ready-to-use screenwash by Krafft, which has Rain-X added.
It is good stuff: applies Rain-X every time screenwash is used, works as well as a fresh coating from the little bottles. No blade judder, either.
