5008 1.6HDI EGC multipull codes

Post by Mark2LTDI »

Ok guys I need some help, the wife's 5008 1.6 HDI 112 EGC (61 plate) is throwing up some codes today.
It's got 68k so not a high miler.
This is what my cheapo reader comes up with.

P0263 Cylinder 1 contribution / balance

P0559 Break booster pressure sensor circuit intermittent

U1108 unidentified code

U1113 unidentified code

U0103 lost communication with gearshift module

U0073 control module communication bus off

I was unable to clear any of these with the reader, it just said something like unable to communicate.

It had No1 injector replaced last year, but was not coded in as I was skint at the time, P0263 was still active once this was done.

It's also been a pig to start sometimes, she tells me the starter struggles to turn the engine over and can take 5 or 6 tries before the engine spins fast enough to start.

Any ideas what's going on before I book it into an indi.

Post your VIN up so I can get the specifics.... but in the interim, I can tell you that Fault P0263 is directly related to the injector classification problem. They are coded for a reason and not doing so will cause problems including, Jerking/stalling, Engine acceleration at wrong time, Noise, Slightly higher fuel consumption, Starting problem, Smoke from the exhaust & Lack of power.

This won't do the system any good, so I suggest that is your first course of action.

The other communication problems are likely because your generic code reader cannot talk to the other ECUs. You need a decent reader like a Lexia 3 VCI with Diagbox to read the newer ECUs that use later protocols. You'll only get generic OBDII codes without it.

Thanks for your reply Marc.

Today the car hasn't shown any fault, so we may be looking for an intermittent issue, great there the easiest ones to find :)

The VIN number is VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

Could this be down to a dyeing battery as I'm not sure how old it is and todays temps have been higher than yesterdays.

Ok, so first things first.... Are you aware that there is recall notice on your vehicle?
An after-sales campaign must be carried out on this vehicle. Advise your client to make an appointment with their authorised dealer as soon as possible
The warning of the advisory notice has flashed up when checking your details, so before anything else I would get it booked in with your dealer. Give them a call and quote your reg / VIN. I cannot tell you what it relates to - they do not make that info available outside the network. But whatever it is, it shouldn't cost you a penny as it is a dealer requested recall.

Ok, so the U**** codes are electrical / ECU related and are usually reported with an associated system (ABS / Gearbox or Lighting etc., etc.), so they are meaningless on their own as we don't know the system they relate to.

I'll leave the other codes for now - but when you speak to the dealer, see what they say first, and see what the recall is about. Don't mention anything about the injector - as if the recall concerns this, they may decline the work on the basis you have not had one fitted correctly (coding).....

If the recall is nothing to do with the injection system, you could ask them to code it for you... but they would need the data on the injector, so unless you kept a record of it that won't help.

That's a lot of info.

I'm aware of one recall for the timing belt, I spoke with the main dealer when I got the car and was told to book it in when it gets to 75k, it has 68k at present, but its now 9 years old which seams a little excessive to me (we've had the car for 18 months now).

Think I'll speak with the MD tomorrow and see if I can get the belt done now and then get an indi to read the codes and sort the injector, no I didn't take a record of the data, to keep the bill down I'll get that myself.
Unless there's a forum member close that can do the codes, as I'd rather my money stays within the forum.

Here is a list of members willing to do diagnostics for other members. A map showing the locations at the bottom of the post (Link to Google map)
OM those most likely to help but be aware that they are not all active all the time - click there name for their profile, activity and PM link.

As there are no active members close to me on the diagnostics map I booked it into the main dealers.
There were no warning lights when it was dropped off but it was tested anyway, this is what they came up with.

P0949 Clutch programming incomplete or not carried out fault, not characterised.
They told me it's either had a new clutch but not been programmed or the clutch and flywheel are "out of spec" and need replacing.
Quote for new clutch was 2k (they'll not be getting that job).
I was told they expected symptoms of stalling and jerkiness, we've had neither.
It's not had a clutch in the last 6 years or so, so suspect it's the original.

P0559 brake signal fault (switch / CAN)
Told that it's most likely to be the brake switch, so new one ordered today.

Does this sound right to you guys ?

Well there can be problems with these piloted manual boxes - and they do need specialist attention when they play up.

The code means the Clutch programming incomplete or not carried out fault: Not characterised, which means that the ECU has detected that the bite point has not been programmed.

This means, whilst the fault is active, the Stop and Start system will be deactivated.

Typical symptoms are: Jerking, Stalling and as said the automatic stopping of the engine will be disabled.

Suspect Areas: Carry out the programming function!

So if you are not experiencing the jerking or stalling, it's not quite fair to cop straight for a replacement of the clutch and DMF. They should at least of offered to undertake the programming procedure first - which I am surprised they did not offer you as this is what is officially recommended.

Incidentally, what was the outcome of the recall that I mentioned?

I'm not sure if the car has stop/start, if it has it's never worked.
A blue "ECO" light comes up when stopped, is this part of the stop/start system ? if it is then this fault may have been present for some years, I wonder if it had a clutch when it was still quite new but not programed, but surely this would have shown up before now.

No they didn't offer to carry out the reprograming function.

I think I'll invest in a PP2000 program and lead, as this has just backed up my loathing of Main Stealers, it's not the staff but the polices.

As far as the timing belt recall goes, they still will not do it until it reaches 75k, 71k at present.
When it is done would they change the water pump at the same time as part of the job, or will I have to pay extra for this ?

Yes it does have Stop & Start. There's a big button with ECO somewhere on the dash. The system, when operational, will stop the engine in traffic and restart the engine when moving off. There are many things that can stop the system working, and one of those will be issues with the piloted gearbox system.

So the recall was for a timing belt... ok, so standard procedure will dictate that they replace the belt only - however, if you ask them to replace the tensioner rollers and the water pump at the same time, they should only charge you for those parts and a relatively small amount of additional time to do those extras, as they have already removed most of what they need to do for the belt. But once done it will give you peace of mind. It's the labour on this job that is the killer.

I've been reading/surfing about the gearbox reset, would a hard reset be worth trying, ie. accelerator peddle hard down from a standing start and holding it there until it changes up.
Or is this just for resetting its learning faze.

There is a bite point learning procedure - but this is done with the aid of the diagnostic tool IIRC on these. But I would get the dealer to do it as there may be another element involved....
