99 206 GTI stereo replacement

Post by loserone »

Hyullo all.

I've got a '99 206 GTI, and the radio has been a bit intermittent. The PO told me that the CD player had been filled with coins, so no longer worked, so I was using it as a radio only. It also cuts out sound over bumps, and can be brought back to life by percussive maintenance; until yesterday. I had some loud pops through the right hand door speaker, and then a burning smell and smoke from the dash. The radio still turns on and looks OK, but is putting out no sound.

I'm assuming the cheapest fix is to buy a £6.50 ISO faceplate and loom adapter, which I've done, but do I need to be concerned about anything else?

E.g.
  • I assume that the steering controls will stop working regardless (I can't see any products to keep this with pre-MUX 206s.
  • Do I need to disconnect the battery before I start?
  • will the dash top display stop working entirely?
All input appreciated.

Ok, so that is historic! An RD1 unit.

So These earlier units are not as integrated into the car systems as the later units. You will probably loose Audion information on the display, but the temp and other info should remain.

Have a look here for an adaptor for the remote audio control stalk:

https://www.dynamicsounds.co.uk/vehiclesearch.html

There are a few types, so I'm sure they would be able to advise on the correct one for you - just decide on the aftermarket Head Unit you are wanting first.

Cheers Marc,

£25 seems a lot just to keep the controls so I think I'll probably just put an aftermarket HU in and pop my spare Parrot kit in at the same time. Good news I won't lose much on the display!

I'd better qualify that last remark - that was in relation to an afermarket adaptor kit - if you are going to replace the unit without it, you may find the display will not function at all - so just be warned

Woah!

I may need to rethink then. Presumably no harm in testing with the cheap ISO adapter lead and deciding whether to get the £25 job later?

That may make sense - but the adaptors all work sightly differently and have different functions / abilities (hence price difference). There are some for the VAN multiplexed system which you don't have and others that will work like the one I linked to for 1998 versions with a stalk without multiplexing.

So I can't really tell you for sure from here - but no harm in trying a cheap one first.

Minor update:

eBay kit was a 4" ISO lead extension and an adapter plate for the dash. And some keys for a different stereo.

Bent the keys open and used one end of each to remove the stereo, and indeed it's just a simple ISO connection. Stuck a Sony tape deck my Dad got as an insurance claim when his 98 Almera was broken into in '00, with a parrot i9100 in between, and it's working fine. Obviously the right generation of 206!
