Classic car insurance ... Fact or fiction ?
when a car becomes a certain age blah blah ...
Classic car insurance is it like the loch ness monster ?
So today i thought OK get a quote on the old zx estate as I've been told it will qualify.
Went on the net found a site did all the form filling waited for the quotes to roll in all 105 and NOT one of them beat my company LV insurance at all.
Being told by 6 different people I should be paying about £80 a year I'm not seeing this at all.
I currently pay £170 fully comp..
Classic is £300+ .... ???
Anyone got any insight or how too ?.
I'm not seeing the £80 pa prices at all and one person even showed me his proof of what his policy cost and he had a 405 sister car to the zx as you all know.
Any help ? Cheers..

£80? Was that this century?
I suppose it depends on what the classic policy offers that your normal one won't?

No direct experience, but I have come across this lot before, and they do say from £70.48.....very precise but with that meaningless word from in front of it.

Re: Classic car insurance ... Fact or fiction ?
I pay £140 for a policy to cover two cars - my 2cv (agreed value at £5000) and my VW Corrado VR6 (agreed value at £5000) with unlimited mileage on both cars. This is with breakdown cover included and full cover for use in Europe.
The drawbacks of a classic policy are that it doesn't earn any no claims bonus, the cars have to be garaged and they cannot generally used for commuting.
They also insist and that I have to have another car for daily use.

Not quite true. Although one company turned us down because we couldn't garage the MGB another accepted us with it being parked on the driveway.

Re: Classic car insurance ... Fact or fiction ?
It was the case with my insurance company but I eventually got them to shuffle on it. Usually both cars a in the garage but if I've another project on the go then one of them will be outside (usually the Corrado) so they agreed to this. I also managed to get them to approve of occasional commuting during the summer. Not quite true.
They're a cracking company to deal with but I'm buggered if I can remember what they're called!

Been with them for years now and they've been great (but I've never had to make a claim with them which is the only time you'll really find out how good an insurance company is, hence why I'll never use Lancaster again!)

This is getting interesting .
If anyone else has any links to other company's paste them here .
It kinda looks like you need to be a bit firm with the company to get what's needed considering how much money they make every year they should take more notice of the customers.

Re: Classic car insurance ... Fact or fiction ?
All the online form filling was similar just a couple of questions different , about 3 years ago i sold a Vauxhall astra 1.7 cdti the chap took a liking to the zx I had as he had to scrap his one due to it being beyond a fair price to repair and so on , he shows me a copy of his policy he had the year before using his iPhone and the policy way about £87 .. As I recall under very strict mileage and having to have another car as well and class that one as a daily runner.GiveMeABreak wrote: ↑14 Jan 2020, 16:07 £80? Was that this century?

Re: Classic car insurance ... Fact or fiction ?
Almost all classic car policies are designed for proper classic cars, not old sheds parked in the road. You must have another car as your daily driver, the classic must be over 20 years old, garaged, not used for commuting or business, limited annual mileage etc. For a typical classic car enthusiast this is normal, its his hobby, its kept in perfect condition and used occasionally.
I`ve had classic cars for over 25 years,my latest is a Mercedes R129. I insure it with LV=, an agreed value of £18K, premium £250. Other classic car insurers were quoting over £300.

Xantia HDI, £1500 min agreed value, 3000 miles maximum, £243 premium
Don't think so, I can insure 40,000 miles a year for less than that, or 8000 or 10000 for around £120.

Re: Classic car insurance ... Fact or fiction ?
So Just this morning I enquired with another company and still end up with another quote which is £145 more than what i pay with LV .
I threw a couple of questions in the mix for example who they compare against or where there prices come from.
Both questions were answered ,what we use is the major insurance data base , asking if I could have a copy under the freedom of information act the insurance man developed a stammer ... ????
So I took that as a no and also cooperate bulldog.
Long gone are the days when you could go to the company and pay a human being, in a real building.
My first company was called computerised they were a small firm cheap and very reliable one friend of mine was with the same company he had the unlucky task of making a claim and was put though to a home number and still got his claim delt with from one of the company peoples home (it was out of hours) .
They even sorted recovery all my mate had to do was sit and wait .
That's what I miss the personal touch all this was 30 years ago now how times change.
Yeah we still can do it with a phone call but its so different,
So I'm back to the quote hunting and so far normal car insurance is still cheaper and far better terms.
Classic car insurance seems to be more aimed at veteran cars .
So that leads me to thinking Veteran car insurance , when , why and HOW !

Re: Classic car insurance ... Fact or fiction ?
The Eldorado is insured on a classic policy with RH (recommended by the owner of a '56 Buick, who raved about their all inclusive European recovery service). What really impressed me about them was they transferred the cover from the STS without any formalities, admin. charges or additional premium, even though it's LHD, not UK spec - & worth nearly 10 times as much. Premium's much the same as the Cherokee though that's on a regular LV comp. policy, albeit with 90% NCD. Really nice, real people to deal with too. The Xantia's with Esure, best price by a country mile - but still about the same as the other 2 put together (although it includes 2nd named driver) because it's in London (the "Yanks" are registered at the Torbay address) - still cheaper than the C15 though which, improbably, is insured under a "specialist vehicle" policy - like a "classic" but without the age prerequisite - otherwise, because it's a van, I couldn't get regular insurance, only "van insurance" which is even more expensive & nobody liked the idea I only wanted "Social, Domestic & Pleasure".
