Well we had a Xsara Picasso a few years ago, and have to say it well suited us and was an excellent comfortable car. Would have still been driving round in it now had I not had a driving into a deep flood incident which sucked up the floodwater into the engine and did for it.

This thread was from when we first got it

That'll be 'Exclusive', PSA don't do 'Executives' :-D

If you get the opportunity plump for a 2.0 HDI and skip the 1.6. Unless they have been meticulously serviced with frequent 6,000 mile oil changes, they do suffer with carbon deposits that clog up the works and blow the turbo. The oil needs frequent changing on this model to keep the oil channels freely lubricated. The particles in older oil can clog the strainer and this restricts the oil pickup, resulting in sludge and then carbon deposits and ultimate failure - so unless you have a good history, do go for the 2.0.

They are pretty robust - watch the sills - but these can be easily repaired or replaced by a competent mechanic.
They have lots of storage, are very configurable seat wise (they can easily be removed if needed), There is under floor storage compartments too and a useful 12V power socket at the rear.

Some Exclusives have the panoramic electric sunroof - which is a nice touch. The driving position is nice and high - easy to get in and out of and plenty of space inside. Instrumentation is nice and clear too.

My sister has one and she has back problems, but finds it easy to get in and out of. These are very popular people carriers and there are still loads of them running around here - spotted a 'Y' reg one the other day, fully loaded with a family of 5 and room for a pony.

I blame autocorrect ! Hahaha .
Well I did go and view the car today and the sills were shot and was offered them to be repaired both sides £150 not to bad...
It had a knock / clonck passenger side front not bad but still something that will get worse and would need investigation,
Rear tyre very badly worn on part shoulder and edge , when started engine shuddered and rattled and smoke did come out the tail pipe , when I test drive it it ran pretty good but the smokey start up could be a worn turbo plug duff glow plugs .
And its the 1.6 hdi sight ticking near middle injectors which these are known for ?
No air box or pipe ... Alarm bells ?
Brakes were all good and all electrics too it had a new clutch 2 years ago and it did feel good too.

The engine did has signs of oil leaks

So I walked away and drove back home feeling satisfied I'd had a look over the Picasso and test drove it and I did follow my niggle.

The drive height is brilliant and getting in and out of it was easy and perfect , I want one.

Did I do the right thing ?

Yep, all those good things will be overshadowed by the engine if there are issues. So at least you have had a spin in one. Now you just need to find a 2.0!

My sister tells me today they are getting a C5 Aircross in March, so will be selling their 2006 Exclusive. Although they have the 1.6 it has been well maintained by the Main Dealer and has no issues. So no doubt she will be asking me to sort out a sale for her at some point!

I have only test driven one. It's a car I would use. Suspension is quite compliant and loads about for spares. Quite roomy, but did not seem as big as my old C5.
You could find a good one, or build a good one. Pity they only done the 2.0 hdi in 90bhp.

One can get a remap up to 123bhp and enormous torque, as I did.with my 04 plate 2.0HDi Berlingo :) 0-60, genuinely, timed on an app at 8.9 seconds and remarkable in-gear pull.

I'm currently "looking after" a 2.0 HDi Picasso, 03 plate Exclusive. Mate dropped it off for me to sort out in May 2018... it's still here, still reliable and I've done 10,000 miles in it 🤣

I'm pretty sure they stopped making the 2.0 8v version in 2005, much like they did with the Berlingo.

Yes, the latest ones I have on file were about Mid 2005 - it was the Euro standards again and the more fuel efficient 1.6 engines that gave similar performance , but brought its own problems.

I had a brand new 2.0hdi sx back in 2002. It had to go on my divorce in 2003 as I could not afford to pay the hp payments on it. I loved it as a family car for us with 3 young kids. I had never driven another until my lady friends zafira self combusted last year and she needed a decent sized car with a higher driving position and a big boot. So I persuaded her to get a picasso, which is a 58 plate 1.6hdi. I travelled to buy it and drove about 180 miles home. It is exactly as I remembered and as I now have quite severe back problems it is superbly easy to get in and out of, and comfortable. Unfortunately it knackered its gearbox after a couple of months, so needed a salvage gearbox and new clutch fitted which really made the car too expensive. However being only the 90hp one it did not have a dmf to contend with. The car is now running really well, the owner loves it, and if I am honest it is a better car for me than my own seat leon is. It's a pity that they only did a 2.0 petrol auto in them, and the newer c4 picasso auto has the dreadful semi auto box. That's where the seat wins, it's only slightly smaller than the picasso, has a 1.6 td engine and vws frankly excellent dsg gearbox in its later and more refined 7 speed which is the smoothest and most responsive auto box I have ever driven. However this is about the picasso, so my 2p worth is I would have no trouble buying another. The gearbox fault on Maria's one was one of those unforseen things and was unlucky. She loves it, I love it, super comfy for us older folk with issues(she has tol but not as bad as mine) and super easy on fuel. She used to get about 300 miles on a tank from her zafira, she gets 600 from the picasso for about the same amount of money. The 1.6hdi engine cant be that bad, if looked after properly they are capable of enormous mileage. The sills rust for fun around the front jacking points, if you find one that hasnt been welded there you can bet it wont be long before it needs it. It's not a biggie though, our 58 plate needed welding for its mot before we bought it. I'd have no problem saying go for one, if you get a good one you will not regret it

They're West Wales, so a bit of a way from Surrey, but the new one won't be here until March, but I'll let you know.
