How to release the battery clip? c5x7

Post by atr »

Hi
It makes me ashamed to admit that I wasn't able to crack the mystery of releasing the plastic clip that secures the battery. the part with the square recess moves only less than a quarter turn, as you can see in the pics and I don't want to apply too much force since I'm afraid of breaking it. what is the secret? is something needs to be pushed/pulled along with the turning? why it had to be complicated? btw - I've manufactured a rectangular (10mm) "wrench" to turn it nicely.
Thanx.
Avi

Hi Avi - this is an easy one for a change! :-D

If you have a socket set, connect the extension bar on its own without any sockets. It's the perfect fit and will turn it easily. Then get some silicone grease spray / marine grease and put a load of that in there, then tighten and loosen it several times and sure enough that will be the end of your problems. It gets all sorts of sand and grit underneath and seizes up.

The square part on the left is just the right size to fit into the plastic:

Mine has always been a pain in the arse and so tight that there was a real possibility of destroying the plastic nut - different in my Mk 1 - I think it is a 24mm or thereabouts.
I used giant screwdrivers to lever the locking plate back, doused it with Plus Gas, which did nothing at all, tried levering it back and forth with no improvement.
It is just left in its furthest retracted position now but only just clears the lip on the battery, has to be encouraged to drop into the space on the tray.
Hasn't fallen out yet

Usually caused by acid 'creep' from the battery, pour a kettle of boiling water over it to remove the acid salts then as said above silicone grease it.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.
