Puretech 130 into 205.

Post by Allmostfrench »

Is there anyone that has swapped a Puretech 130 engine and manual gearbox from (say) a 308 or 3008 into a 205?
I like triples and all of that low and mid-range torque is more useful in a fast road car than top end.

The 1600 is getting tired and the Puretechs would be nice and light too.
Or is there a major hurdle in such a swap?

Cheers, Chris.

It's not just the engine - you have to consider all the electronics that need to talk to each other (engine ECU, BSI and immobilisers have to be matched), the ABS / ESP system will likely be different on each model and then they all have to talk to each other or you'll run into problems guaranteed. Transmission, clutch and other mechanical differences like driveshafts and steering rack will be different - the list goes on....

It would be easier to rebuild the 1600 with both hands tied behind your back, and your legs in plaster. You'll need to swap *everything* engine and electronic related, plus all sensors, likely driveshafts, ABS, the list would go on forever.

I would agree to get your existing engine reconditioned. However if you have enough time, money, ability, and some would say stupidity you could put anything in. For instance my son in law, the one who broke his collarbone writing off his first big bike at one day and 43 miles old, and cut part of his thumb and two fingers off with a bench saw, is currently putting a honda civic type r engine and box into a 205. He has all the attributes mentioned above. He has the engine and box in place but no driveshafts or electronics yet.

Anything is possible, if you have the time, money, skill and engineering facilities. I have seen 205's with MI16 engines, 406 V6's etc. I myself have built 205 rally cars.
Yes it's fascinating but at the end of the day I think, just what is the point ? Then of course you will have to get this heavily modified car insured and MOT.

Thanks for all of the wisdom and warnings, folks.

Hmmm, might be in the "too hard basket" after all.
