Whilst police 'chases' rarely get to 100 miles, if a car is on shift for (say) 10 hours, and it needs to be ready for all of those hours, and all the extra electronics used in the car are draining the battery / batteries, and it needs to be ready for the next shift once the present one is over.... you can see why BEVs aren't so suitable for the high profile policing.

*- Whilst most of the public won't vote for it, those that have had direct experience of the lack of police resources, and those who can see further than their bank balances may well vote for higher taxes

Oh no they won't. :-D

On the other hand, I saw a recent article which said so-called SUVs outsell electric cars by a factor of 37 or 29 or so, can't remember exactly.

I'm a bit taken aback by the article claiming 3% of new sales are electric cars.

It will take some time for those effects to come through a few years old on the secondhand market, which is where we are interested. At the moment Autotrader has 509,000 cars, 2400 full electric, 14000 petrol electric hybrid, 400 dlesel electric (about a third of hybrids plug-in).

As with all modern advertising, having spent 30 seconds of your time watching this you will be no better informed at the end.

Its just not very good, and not very creative, interesting or the slightest bit memorable at all, but that's just my opinion of course.

Fully charged do a little more on it

Its got the "pouches in sardine tins" battery modules from China's CATL , and gets a decent thumbs up so far.

Interesting video that Neil, I do like Jonny Smith's "down to earth" presentation style in general which helps. Having taken on board Vauxhall's research defining the everyday customer's needs being a car that doesn't stand out as different from ICE cars, one wonders what the everyday customer's feelings are about the possibility of having their nice conforming cars saddled with green number plates? :?: :)

Welcome to 2020 everyone, I thought this was worth posting - a quick summary of some of the EV's that should be actually available to buy in 2020. Some are models already on sale and some are ones that are promised to start shipping to customers in 2020.

Cars a put through stringent safety tests these days, and achieving the highest Euro NCAP rating of 5 stars is this little EV offering from MG (yes all the way from China).

Now this isn't going to be on the bargain basement thread, and initially I expect it is looking at the US domestic market, but a very impressive walk through of RIVIAN's latest offering with Fully Charged. Very well presented.
You get the impression the company know exactly what they are doing, and are going to become a significant player. Very impressed with the British Engineer Marc Vinnells doing the walk through with Jonny Smith.

Wasn't sure which of the EV related threads this should go in, but I thought this video was interesting.

It's a video by a private hire driver in London of his first day using the Kia e-Niro as a private hire Taxi, (previously he was driving a Hybrid) during which he did over 200 miles.

So in answer to the question can a BEV fulfil the role of a Taxi, the answer is yes, but only if it has a very long range like the e-Niro! :) The conversation with the Leaf owner near the end (I presume a Leaf 40) who was stunned at the range he was getting in the Niro was quite amusing... Real world range driving it as a Taxi in the London Metro area in summer he was getting around 320 miles of range, (well above the claimed figures) and in a later video in winter he is getting around 280 miles.

In this summer video he is averaging 5.0 miles/kWh which is outstanding for an 1800Kg crossover SUV considering that my tiny 1100Kg Ion can only slightly best it at about 5.4 miles/kWh in summer with no heater and at lower speeds, and other cars like a Leaf are more like 4 - 4.4 miles/kWh in the same conditions. I'd love to know what the secret sauce is that Hyundai and Kia share for efficiency, their efficiency really is a cut above practically every other EV out there Tesla included with only the Model 3 (non performance variant) even coming close in miles/kWh.

He's made some other videos after he's had the car a bit longer and has already done 20k miles in it in a few months.

That comment surprised me Neil, what range are you getting from the Leaf? :?:

So would I....

It has about 3x the range of a 24kWh Leaf but is also currently 3x as expensive as it's brand new in the low to mid £30k range whereas a 24kWh Leaf is several years old now so can be had for respectable 2nd hand prices...(and wasn't as expensive even when new)

Cant wait until they eventually shuffle their way down in to the 3-6 year old 2nd hand market.

I think for the next few years, range will be a large determining factor of the value of an EV as it goes from new and moves down into the second hand market. After another 5-10 years second hand EV's should all have relatively long ranges and it won't be as much of a buying factor anymore when choosing.

I am working in the 20% to 80% range for charging the battery. Never charged it up to 100% in the 2500 ish miles I have had it. So that translates into 70 ish down to 20 ish miles before I plug it in again.
I like to have 20 in hand when I either get home or arrive at the planned charger when out and about just in case I need to find an alternative.

Surprisingly perhaps this has not caused any great inconvenience so far, granted our motoring is usually not hampered by time constraints, or a regular daily commute, and new charger days out are an adventure and a joy :-D (I am easily pleased :) )
