Is there anyone here who owns any PSA vehicle equipped with 1.8 16V LFY engine? (XU7JP4)

Post by LFY »

Hello everyone.
I am looking to test my car (which is equipped with this engine) to see how fast and healthy it is. I have a criteria for measuring engine power which is far better and more reliable than 0-100 km/h acceleration times. Any performance measurement that requires launching from start is useless for me because it depends on factors like the quality or design of the tires or the concrete.

So, I always test my car by doing a short 100-160 km/h run through the gears. It only requires one gear change and shows how healthy my engine is.
Most vehicles equipped with LFY engine (including 406, Xantia, 306 and Xsara) can complete this test by 3rd and 4th gear only. I mean starting @ 100 km/h in 3rd and shifting to 4th.
My main problem is that I live in an area which is very high above sea level (elevation = 1500 meters!). So, according to some calculations I lose about 15 hp compared to sea-level areas. (110 - 15 = 95 hp!)

I wanted to see how your cars perform in areas with lower elevations and probably with higher quality fuel. The best petrol I have access to hardly reaches 90 octane! This engine requires 95 Octane fuel to do its best.
I will appreciate if you can upload videos of your cars here to see how this engine performs in ideal conditions.

Are you really hoping to get anything meaningful by asking folk to take their cars to 100mph (160km/h) in 4th gear, on (presumably) a public road, while filming and timing it?
All sorts of implications there, but that's just my point of view.

Some lower speed, within one gear, acceleration times between two speeds would be much safer, instead of just revving the nuts off the poor engine at under conditions the car was never designed for.

I don't ask anyone to do the test in crowded areas. There are lots of roads with low to zero traffics.
Revving a petrol engine for a short burst of acceleration will do no harm because they are designed to be revved once in a while. The whole test will last less than 20 seconds! according to my predictions. It can be very meaningful by comparing times and test conditions.

Acceleration within one gear is not a good criteria because the gearboxes and gearings are different.

Driving at 160 kph will get you penalty points, fines and even put off the road.

Maybe things are different in Iran - but in Europe we have laws - unless you're on a race track and I doubt anyone is going to want to do that for you.

Not everywhere, but the nearest place to me I've done that speed is a few hours away, between Merzig and Saarlouis, or somewhere southeast or southwest of Bonn.

Here we have laws too but I know some abandoned roads that are always suitable to do some measurements.
Apart from that, there are some parts of German Autobahn that has no speed limit. Maybe some members who are near Germany can try it.
160 kph for a few seconds is not that much of a speed.

I wouldn't think that accelerating from 100-160 is a very scientific way to measure anything in a car. Dyno and rolling road tests which can be measured on a computer are readily available and very cheap. There's no abandoned roads where I live but if there were I wouldn't like to be in my matchbox car at 160 kph

I can't see the test being very scientific or reliable, there are too many unknowns. You mentioned standing starts not being informative, true and the same goes at higher speeds. Road quality, tyres (type, size, pressures) weight of the car, gear ratios, the list goes on and on. You need a rolling road and dyno, then you can compare your results to other 'similar' set ups.

Yes but the effect of these variables in standing start acceleration is much more than rolling acceleration.

If acceleration measurement was not a scientific way of judging cars, then official publications would never test acceleration times. Dynamometers are not available everywhere and here is it extremely expensive even just to test your car for a single run.

This is an official road test of Citroen Xsara Coupe VTS 1.8 16V which was done in 1998 by the leading German magazine Auto Motor Und Sport (AMS).

If you look carefully you can calculate 100-160 km/h time by subtracting 0-100 km/h time from 0-160 time.

Acceleration tests are important tests that can really prove the health of an engine. I have always tested cars based on their accelerations and always found out that cars that had serious technical issues had slow times.

"If acceleration measurement was not a scientific way of judging cars, then official publications would never test acceleration times."?
Do you know how they take the measurements? It's not on an "abandoned road" with a mobile phone. It's usually 0-60 MPH so that's from a standing start. Really you can only do these tests objectively, that means having people to verify results using timers sensors etc.
Do you understand the tests results you posted? Both of these are from a standing start so your calculation is way off. A car travelling at 100kph won't take 18 seconds to reach 160 kph. It's specious reasoning to think you can subtract one from the other to get the answer you want.
Ireland is the most expensive country in Europe. Cost of 20 minutes on a dyno? €25. Track days about €150
I think you're just not getting the answer you want here but I'd be surprised if any member would rag his car on a public road so he could get bragging rights in a hairy chest contest.
BTW my 1.4 hdi can accelerate from 100-160kph in 4 seconds.

I think you forgot to see the results for in gear times below standing start times! They have also measured times from 60 and 80 km/h! So, all measurements are not from a dig!
Many people test their cars on so-called abandoned roads and achieve times that are very close to this. They don't measure with mobile phone but with VBOX timing gear. If you are well-educated you can calculate accurate times even with your mobile phone chronometer. You only have to calculate at which RPM your car reaches the real speed you want to measure. For example Xsara reaches 100 km/h in 3rd gear at 4920 RPM. If you stop your timing at 4920 RPM, you will see that the time you achieved with your mobile phone is very close to the time measured by VBOX Racelogic! I have tried it, you can too!

You can easily calculate the time for each speed increments by calculation. This is something that is done by many other official auto testers in Youtube channels either.

0-100 = 10.0
0-160 = 27.8

100-160 = 17.8

Yes, it is as easy as this! Math doesn't lie if they had done a rolling acceleration from 100, the result would be very close to 18.
I think you're just not getting the answer you want here
Yes, I agree that I may not get my answer here but that doesn't mean acceleration measurement is useless.
