Now, is EGC just Peugeot-speak for "it's not EGS!!" or have they actually made it more reliable?

EGC (Peugeot) and EGS (Citroen) are the same thing and the same system - so avoid unless you are confident in it and have the bank balance to go with it Mike.
The new name ETG (Efficient Tronic Gearbox 6) is a 6 speed update with a different driving programme to make it more economical, but is essentially an updated version of the EGC and EGS.
Only the newer EATs are the proper Auto boxes.
