We had a local company nearby that started to build windfarm towers as an addition to building bridges, they still do that at other sites.
The wind tower plant didn't last long.

I think we'll just have to agree to disagree, Simon. 8-[ I'm happy with the idea that all major power generation methods have their pros and cons. None of them are perfect, and none of them hold the ace card, but all of them - even the most polluting of them - have saved more lives than they've ever ended with the electricity they've produced.
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

Well the catalyst to recent debate on here was the news from Bristol of plans for a diesel ban in the City.

Bristol just needs a few of these, reviving an old brand, and the more they make, the more they flog, hopefully the cheaper they will become, and hey presto a nice retro camper van project too.

So what are the risks?
No one can be entirely sure, which makes the research off Spain highly relevant.

It's widely accepted that whatever is in the path of the mining machines will be destroyed - there's no argument about that.

But what's uncertain is how far the damage will reach, in particular the size of the plumes of silt and sand churned up and the distance they will travel, potentially endangering marine life far beyond the mining site.

So for any organisms feeding by filter, waters that are suddenly filled with stirred-up sediment would be threatening.

"Many species are unknown or not described, and let alone do we know how they will respond to this activity - we can only estimate."

And Dr de Stigter warned of the danger of doing to the oceans what humanity has done to the land.

"With every new human activity it's often difficult to foresee all the consequences of that in the long term.

"What is new here is that we are entering an environment that is almost completely untouched."

It came about because government set impossible targets so the manufacturers had to cheat - or give up, & greed (sorry, the profit motive) will always prevail. However, it's irreversible history (just wished I'd bought VW shares at the time) about which nothing can be done.

Not even that, we've not been around long enough. In millions of years time the human race will just be seen as a glitch - if it's existence is acknowledged at.

Why is it important to maintain this sense pf perspective? Because it's only a matter of time before there's a need to address the ecological impact of improving the environment.

Sorry but that's just nonsense. Poor hard done by car manufacturers who are trying to produce engines based on 100 year old internal combustion technology that is struggling to meet modern emissions targets and is no longer fit for purpose. Cry me a river! Adapt to the new reality or go out of business.

"Had to cheat or give up" is not an excuse to design in illegal defeat devices that blatently allow the car to produce up to 16x the legally allowed limits of noxious and poisionness pollutants when it is not under test so that they can lazily continue with the same old polluting but profitable crap instead of investing in new technologies like Hybrid vehicles or BEV's. :roll:

The whole point of the constantly lowering emissions targets is to force manufacturers off traditional internal combustion engines by making it impossible to meet the targets using a conventional combustion engine alone. Manufactors know this but instead of investing in new technology that genuinely is cleaner they decided it was better to lie to the public and regulators and fit defeat devices instead. Sorry but I have zero sympathy for this disgusting and cynical behaviour.

The EU regulators are partly to blame for this situation too - not for setting targets that are difficult to achieve, but for not having an adequate test regime during vehicle certification that is so easy to defeat, and not having the teeth to actually fine manufacturers in any meaningful way when they got caught.

The US regulators severely fined the manufacturers despite the number of cheating Diesels in the US being less than 2% of the cars on the road there, meanwhile the EU regulators where 60% of the cars on the road are cheating Diesels gave the manufacturers a slap with a wet bus ticket and sat them in the naughty corner for 5 minutes.

Several years later a large percentage of Diesels are still many times over the legal limit and yet they're still allowed to sell them and get away with it! Without regulators having proper teeth having targets is a bit pointless...

Well for a start the regulators could actually enforce the limits instead of letting manufacturers continue to flaunt them to this day...
