407 2.0hdi won’t start !

Post by Martinez »

Just lately my engine light has been coming on more n more. I read the codes earlier this year and it said egr faults. Anyway, usual blast up motorway and it tends to clear. I’ve been planning to clean it out but as it keeps clearing I got lazy. Came home down M6 last night and after about a mile on an A road I had to stop at lights. Just before this the engine light had come on and beep saying anti pollution fault, went to pull away from lights and instead of engine revving it died. It was also a bugger to start again and spluttered n farted before it eventually fired up. Next junction again didn’t want to rev, like a real flat spot. Anyway, left it parked overnight thinking it’ll be ok and now it won’t start at all. OBD2 says number of anti pollution faults and something about being low ! No ideas now. Anyone advise on best way forward ?

Just plugged OBD2 in to check codes. All it says is P1351. Tried to start it and it just splutters but won’t run. Strong smell of diesel outside of car. Heater plugs ?

Unfortunately I cleared all the codes before noting them down. Only thing that comes up now is the one I posted. Vin is VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]. car is 2010 with 136000 miles and always been reliable. I just put a new battery on it last week as I noticed last cold spell we had that it struggled to start sometimes. It’s bloody cold out there now and I’ve just put old battery back on which still seems good but still no start. I used to own a 306 td that did this to me and it was glow plugs but easy to do whereas this car they’re tucked down the back with egr valve etc in the bloody way ! I bought a new set of glow plugs but the job scares me !

Unlikely to be glow plugs, they aren't activated for cold starting until it is -5⁰C in HDi's. They will start without them anyway.
They are active for a short time after starting to reduce exhaust fumes.

One of the main things that will inhibit starting is the starter turning too slowly. The engine needs to turn over quite rapidly before it will fire.
Had that with mine a couple of years ago.
The other thing is air in the fuel lines.

Had an issue with air in fuel line couple of years back after idiot mechanic changed filter for me but not the seal ! Big bubbles easily seen, but it looks fine to me. I’ll try changing the filter tomorrow n clean it all out anyway.

Most of the codes that I’ve had on it for past year are egr valve issues, but it’s always started. Seems to turn over ok

It may seem to turn over OK but if it is too slow IIRC the ECU prevents the injectors from firing.
There may be enough kick in a fully charged high current battery to kick it off though.

I just bought a new battery last week so if it’s not turning big over fast enough it must be the starter motor. But tbh it’s not been an issue until today

Before changing any more parts I would suggest you check the battery cables. Try starting her again, and then feel the cables. If any feel warm to the touch it is possible the cable is beginning to fail (as the resistance is going up), and may need replacing.

Are you using a generic reader or a real one. A lot of generic readers will see some faults but not all as they can't speak fluent PSA. With Diagbox you can go in deeper and get live data, in your case fuel rail pressure, which will stop the guess work. You can also do actuator tests, such as the egr.

Just a generic one £10 off eBay. I’ll try changing the fuel filter. I’ve also borrowed some jump leads off a mate so will try it with 2 batteries. It’s bloody cold out there this morning. Tried to start it again, it fired but won’t start n run

Ok, so changed filter but no difference. If I turn ignition on n wait for glow plug light to go out a couple of times it does almost start but just won’t continue n run. Reminds me of my old 306 when the glow plugs were knackered. It’s 3 deg C here coldest it’s been this year if it warms up tomorrow I’ll try it again but going to a wedding and I have to borrow a car as by Bingo is only 2 seats

Surprised that the glow plug light comes on even at 3°C.
I have very rarely seen mine light up, only when it has been -10°C. I don't let them stay on though, just start it, a tiny bit slower at -10 but starts like a petrol car.
I actually don't think about glow plugs - just start it then realise that the glow plug light flashed on as I turn the key.
The only time I did have trouble was when the starter was running too slowly.
£160 fitted - not a cheapo ECP thing either - they do well to last six months.

Previous C5 was the same, never any problems starting even in the coldest winter weather.

Snap. I don’t usually wait for any light either just turn on and it starts right up. But last winter it was a bit sluggish to start so I invested in a new battery before it let me down this year. I’ve got a new set of glow plugs ready to fit but it looks like a real swine of a job. Is there a good guide to it on this forum ? Most stuff I’ve seen on YouTube isn’t that clear
