Yep, it was an interesting concept, but thwarted by - amongst other things - the need for a more powerful engine.
The Harrier Jump Jet is often cited as the first successful V/STOL aircraft, but many reckon it was the English Electric Lightning that wore that crown - it used to get to the end of the runway, take off and go vertical, fly around a bit then run out of fuel and land vertically

Verrry occasionally we get them - or things like them - overflying at work. Normally it's the Chinooks out of Odiham that we get several times a day flying at treetop height scaring the bejeezus out of the wildlife. Noisy bu88ers

Talking about the Lightning, who knows what prototype aeroplane (that never made it into production) was capable of outrunning the Lightning?

Yup! Try looking for the program "Who murdered the TSR2?". It looked like it was a brilliant design (there were flaws, but these were being dealt with), and then, suddenly, the Government decided to scrap her, and did not let the senior members of the project management warn their staff. The first the workforce knew about it was when the Budget announced the end of TSR2.

On the way back from one test flight the TSR2 pilot lit up ONE afterburner (she was a twin engine aeroplane). The camera plane (a Lightning) had both on, and was losing ground at about 50 knots. How fast could the TSR2 have gone if she went to FULL power? We will never know, but a strike aircraft that could outrun the fastest fighter of the time should NEVER have been allowed to fail/be killed off.

I remember as a schoolboy being devastated when the cancellation was announced. My group of aero modellers had all been working on building model TSR2's based on the few pictures we could find. One of the boy's uncle was working on the real thing and he sent my friend some bits and pieces of info, but as our club was about scale modelling real aircraft, when the project was cancelled we turned our attention to other things as we grew up! At a later date I dug out the undercarriage I had made and used it for the construction of a radio controlled "quad bike/buggy"!!

Watched number 2 on Catch up. Gentle entertainment and nice scenery. PIcking up on a Dr Who ref from another post this morning, they did do a little piece on Bessie a "SIVA Edwardian" from that hotbed of the automobile industry Dorset! (http://www.sivaedwardian.co.uk/bessie_2.html), now resident at the NAtional Motor Museum.

Yes, saw them on Charmouth beach. I haven't been down there myself for a number of years. Our son goes down there most days as our grandson goes to school there - practically right on the beach.
