Yes but don't forget the location makes a massive difference - if you live in a grand theft auto area and have a lot of 5 year old car thieves...

That's why the Caddys & Cherokees are domiciled in Devon. ;)

Just as there are companies who have an upper age limit (RH who cover the Eldo is one that doesn't - BUT think maybe they only do "classics") there are others that specialise in older drivers, no doubt capitalising on their better than average claim record (although I wouldn't touch SAGA with a barge pole)

I just got an email invite to get a quote from More-Than, they weren't kidding with more than £614 for the same cover,.

There's a 'chat now' link on the quote form so I clicked on it, it says you're 3 in the queue, ten minutes later I'm still 3 in the queue so I gave up.

I got mine. £346 up from £319.

Got on the webchat. Told them to bugger off as it was way too expensive.

Miraculously it came down to £280 instantly. Direct Line.

Just whatever you do, for the love of puppies, don't go near Adrian Flux.

Their renewal practices are downright despicable, as are the resulting penalties for "cancelling within term" when you tell them where to stick it when they've automatically renewed the policy despite having apparently "sent several emails containing the renewal information" none of which I ever received. Never mind their wanting north of £1100 a year to cover the Xantia alone to start with!

Their customer service is so shocking that once you're insured with them, trying to actually cancel a policy is like trying to knit a scarf while wearing boxing gloves and being eaten by a lion.

Not helped either in that every year I declare the modifications to the car, and every year when I then next speak to them there's no trace of them...To the extent that one year they were actually listed in the policy summary - but not on the insurance certificate itself (it actually stated "Modifications: None")...Go figure.

I have never come across a more downright deliberately obstructive company since the day I started driving. Heaven forbid you ever actually need to try to claim from them...

Well ten minutes on Direct-Line online chat has sorted that.

Conversation then went on:

" I'm astonished at the huge increase for the renewal,"

" The renewal is £342.30."

"So how is it that the post renewal is £428.96?"

"The loyalty discount hadn't been applied, do you want to go ahead? "

Do you think they would have taken the higher sum if I hadn't got on to them?

Another reason why you simply MUST use the comparison site in plenty of time - as you can often find your existing insurer quoting far less that your renewal quote! They hope you just renew and forget it and rely on this.

It's the same with the AA - routinely doubling their renewal every year - and every year I have to get on the phone and tell them where to go before they reduce it back to the same as the previous premium. I did this for 7 years, before finally leaving when they decided to reduce it, but not by the amount I was prepared to pay. They knew I never claimed in 20 years - so their loss. So a member for 28 years and now they lost me over that.

In my case none of the comparison sites offered a deal that would have satisfied me and many of the insurers now, like Direct-Line, opt out of the comparison site's offerings.

I suppose if you're happy repeatedly filling in all your info with multiple insurer sites or spending hours on the phone - then that't the way - but I always run through the comparison sites first - but to date nothing has come close. I find some of the direct insurers fluff up the costs with gimmicky things I don't want and are still more expensive. I'm still only paying £259 for my X7 fully comp, with protected NCD and low to zero voluntary excess.

How many miles coverage have you asked for? That has a major influence on premium.

I have insurance for 12,000 miles p.a. (I'll get a quote for less next year) and this year I'm paying £246.26 on the (maximum allowable) nine years protected NCD. That's for two named drivers with fully comp insurance when driving abroad.

EDIT. I do have a fairly large £450 excess (£250 voluntary) which I should have mentioned.

Work colleague this morning was also complaining about a ~20% increase in his recent car insurance quote from Direct Line. Looks like an across the board hike.

And what is your post code? That also makes a difference. I've now given my old Saxo to my grandson. He tried taxing it from his home address (which is just outside the Greater London boundary) and got his quote. He then tried from my address, which is a couple of miles away from him, and the quote came back £200 less. Consequently, I've got it parked on my drive. A young lad who lives across the junction from me started driving a couple of years ago. His four friends all keep their cars on his Mum's driveway. I guess they are doing likewise.

That's very true but not something that we can compare directly between us all.
