Corgi James Bond Aston Martin DB5...and other well-loved toys

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Have you got one, did you have one, have you still got the "baddie"

Here's mine 2019 over 50 years on since I first got it.
Corgi Model No 261 Aston Martin DB5
Corgi Model No 261 Aston Martin DB5
James May's piece on it here is superb.
James May: Why the Corgi James Bond Aston Martin DB5 is the most significant car ever
It may not seem it when compared with the iPad, but by the standards of 1965 the Corgi Bond DB5 was a gadget-laden miracle.
It is the working ejector seat that is so deeply ingrained in the consciousness of people about my age. It was an unimaginable marvel,

Yes, I had one, but I'm sure mine was silver. Had the rear bullet-proof screen that popped up

Actually it was the DB6 - just found one:
DB6.PNG
- reminds me of the Batmobile I also had complete with red plastic flames that shot out the back, a front buzzsaw that shot out the bumper and several other gadgets that I can't remember now.
batmobile.PNG
Oh, and a Dinky UFO space Interceptor that fires the front rocket.
UFO.PNG
They don' t make them like that anymore.

James May mentions this in his piece.
The popularity of the Bond Corgi is simple to analyse. It wasn’t just the association with the film Goldfinger, and it certainly wasn’t fidelity. It’s the wrong colour, for a start. Apparently Corgi’s marketing team didn’t like the proposed — and cinematically authentic — silver finish because it looked too much like the raw zinc alloy of the unpainted body, so a hasty decision was made to paint it gold as a nod to the film’s title.

In the first year of production more than 2.5m Corgi Bond Astons were sold, making it the fastest-selling car of all time. It was revised and enlarged in 1968
Liked your reminiscence about the Batmobile and the Dinky UFO Space Interceptor. I do have vague recollections of those, I'll have to have a paddle around for some visuals to jog my memory. :-D

I only had a few 'British / American' toys as we lived abroad most of my young life in the Far East and Europe with occasional returns back to the UK every few years - so as as we moved around there was limited space in packing crates and toys were not essentials - apparently!

Mind you it did afford me new and vastly superior toys in places like Singapore - as there were remote controlled everything over there - toys you would never see back in the UK - loads of walking talking mechanical robots, and electronic gadgets to make up for it. Alas... again, was only allowed to pick my most sacred toys from therewhen we returned back to the UK

I had a Lotus Esprit, which obviously joined me in the bath, shooting missiles out the back, they got lost quickly! Also had an Evel Knieval bike that you wound up from it's launch pad.

Seeing as this will likely move on, I might as well put up my other dinky toys:

The Captain Scarlet Mobile
Scarley.PNG
The SPV (Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle)
SPV.PNG
and whose collection wouldn't be complete without Thunderbird 2 (with thunderbird 4 inside)
Thunder.PNG
...and a little clip to showcase 2 of them...

Sci-Fi buff I'm afraid, so Gadgets, gizmos and the like.

Growing up, I hated most British cars - bloody awful things (Morris. BL, Ford and the like), with the exception of Jags and Rollers. I had an early introduction to Citroen in Germany and France seeing my first DS at an early age - reminded my instantly of Thunderbird 2.

My French teacher (when I was back at school in Winchester) had a GSA Pallas and she never flinched at the school speed humps - Stiletto to the metal and "D'accord, je me casse."

My son was into Dr Who, he actually went through customs in Le Havre aged 4 with his Cyborg helmet on. I only realised when the customs chap looked into the back seats from his cabin and started smiling. He didn't ask him to remove it.

I see the Elf 'n' safety was on form back in the 70s from the box with the Lotus there - one of my favourite Bond movie. Some cracking tunes - especially the skiing sequence - although with no CGI in those days, the fake Roger skiing scenes did look chronic- the way he was bobbing up and down almost in slow mo - he could of been in a Citroen I guess.

Could you name all of the Bond movies in chronological order? I think the title of the next one is particularly unimaginative, but rumours are the DB5 is to make a re-appearance.

And as I like the music so much, here's the clip:

and as I know that Neil likes a bit of Trivia - can anyone make the connection between this scene and Gerry Anderson's TV Sci-Fi show UFO from which the Dinky Interceptors come from a few posts ago?
