Your opinion on wheel spacers

Wheel spacers are useful if you are fitting non-standard wheels that sit too close into the hub, maybe catching the caliper for instance. If you're altering the width and/or the diameter of the wheels then they can also help to find the correct position on the tyre to give the correct offset with regards to the centre line of the tyre and hence the correct self-centring action.

What they shouldn't be used for is to simply push the wheels further out in the search for a wider track. This will alter the self-centring (making the steering wheel heavier to turn), wear the tyres out quicker and put extra strain on the wheel bearings.

What do you need them for, just out of interest? I ran C5 MK1 alloys and Xantia Alloys on my M59 Berlingo with no spacers or issues at all, with 195/65/15 tyres.

Spacers are ok in my opinion if they are for sorting out the offset on non standard wheels. For example on my c4, then c5 I had a set of aftermarket wheels which were ET 38 if I remember correctly. The recommended ET for both these cars was 18, also as far as I can remember. Therfore 20mm spacers corrected the ET. The et is the offset of the wheels. However it is not so simple as that, it is highly recommended to use hubcentric spacers. Most aftermarket wheels have a central bore of 73mm, and when using them without spacers you need spigot rings between the centre of the hub and the wheel. The spacers I had have a centre bore of 73 mm to fit into aftermarket wheels, and had a centre bore to fit the hub also of 73mm, so needed the appropriate spigot rings between the hub and spacer. I personally would not now use universal non hubcentric spacers. This is because once I did, and the full weight of the car is on just the wheel studs. This is too much stress and can result in the studs bending, snapping working loose etc. This did happen to me and I was very lucky I stopped and found out what was causing the vibrations before the wheel came off and caused a nasty accident.

Can you recommend who makes quality spacers. Also which are better - bolt through ( longer bolts ) or bolt-on spacers( spacer attaches to the hub with special bolts and a wheel attaches to the spacer ).

The ones I had were bolt through with extended bolts and I had no problems. I do not remember who made them or which seller I bought them from but they were bought from ebay. When I have a bit more time I shall look for a similar set on ebay and post them up here
