Whatsthisthen?..the impossible one?

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

NewcastleFalcon wrote: 08 Aug 2019, 23:03 My knowledge of american cars is minimal, but I saw a pair of them in the Northumberland backwater of Allendale today.

So have a go at these, the white one from a distance I thought was a Rover from the front end.

Yes Yes Yes! I have now educated myself..dont know what an FMV is though...
Spoiler: show
"I’ve since discovered there are two schools of thought behind this phrase. It was used in a 1970s kids TV programme called Noah & Nellie. It was also used to summon British seaside visitors onto trip boats (dating back to the Victorian era), and since adapted for use by anyone who’s about to embark on a happy, holiday journey." from here

Whatsthisthen?.the impossible one?

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Here is all the evidence. I dont know what it is, and I didnt pull up the cover to find out. It is the impossible challenge :?: . So I am going to join in myself with the process, see if we can narrow it down. Ultimately I could find out myself by returning to the scene of the photo, but is there enough evidence in the pics to nail it :?:

Well that tyre lying on the top of the tarp is one of these
from here https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/525-550x17-lucas.html

5.25/5.50X17 Tyres
550X17 tyres or 525X17 tyres were reasonably common place tyres. Lea Francis fitted them in the late 30's, and Rover fitted 525/550X17 tyres to the Rover ten, Rover 12HP, Rover 14HP and Rover 16 HP .
Now that doesn't nail it down as that size was "reasonably commonplace" and who is to say the tyre on the top is from the car under the tarp. Its a start.

It also has a five stud wheel.

To me it has the shape of a cabriolet, a two door. Small possibility that the roof may have been cut off but unlikely.

The wheels are solid pressed steel with no spokes or "holes" and 5 stud as mentioned before.

I think we are looking at late 30's to early 50's as the likely period of the car.

In that case, there's a high chance that Gibbo either used to own one, service one, or had sold one

I think that has a very good chance of being a correct guess Mike. Next time I pass by, and it is fairly regular occurence, I will attempt a bit of detective work, ask a few questions and see if I can confirm the identification. I dont think its moving anywhere!

I found doing searches for the various possibilities, that my desired pictures of vehicles with their hub caps off showing off their "five studs" are very thin on the ground. There is some details of specs of the older vehicles and some do mention tyre size. I ruled out a hillman minx drophead due to the fact as standard they had 16" wheels.

The rover 12 tourer according to this listing had a tickford body and only 200 built, so if our whatsthisthen turns out to be one of them then it very probably has value even in its tarpaulined up state.

listing here of a grey one

A bit of colateral information. Part of the "owners" stable photographed by me back in 2015 were these two.
A second Gold Volvo 164, and a Wolseley 14/60 (March 1938 1818cc).

A small relevance perhaps, the standard tyre size of a Wolseley 14/60 is 16" (6.00-16), maybe more confirmation that the tyre 5.25 5.50-17 on the top of the tarp came from the car under the tarp, and a pointer to a possible Rover 12 Tourer too.
