Re: The Pickled Egg Quiz
Its surprising how much detail is available, and how easy it is to retrieve it. Even an account of the actual journey and the precise times of setting off (9.26 a.m.) and arrival (5.40 pm) and fascinating facts like "and out of 133 horses we passed only two little ponies did not seem to appreciate the innovation." Had you asked the same question back in the 70's it would have had to wait for the next trip to the nearest University reference library to get anywhere near an answer.
Hats off to those who take the time to put together such interesting snippets of information on the net.
( and of course to FCF participators teasing this sort of stuff out! cheers Bobins!)

Pickled Egg Quiz-What's C (12) H (22) O?
So Steve was right. Geosmin is the name I heard for it but yes its the chemical which is the smell of rain on the ground/tarmac after a dry period. Look out for your next Geosmin moment and amaze anyone who will listen with your new found knowledgeSo the trivia question/task is....
Find out what C12H22O is...and what is its name.

It seems to be along the lines of Petrichor.
I presumed that it was Methane at first sight. Not so.
I did cheat and had Google assist.

Could it be Dicyclohexyl ether?
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

Yes - soap!
Interesting how these common-or-garden substances' chemistry remains pretty much a mystery to most of us.
I have some hazy school memories of spectacular demonstration experiments on the chemy lab, one of which involved pouring (I think) concentrated nitric acid into a beaker containing a few cm of white sugar. The sugar turned black, and a column of carbon rose vertically from the beaker, to a height of nearly half a metre. Just the thing for mid-teens schoolboys...!

Yes there were some fun chemistry lessons, I remember our Chemistry man (Doc) showing us how water could be "made"! Put some soap solution into a test tube, then bubble through some hydrogen and some oxygen, apply a lighted taper to the mouth of the tube, jump at the bang and observe the water vapour running down the tube! "Wow" we said, "what happens if you do it on a bigger scale?" "Well" he said, "follow me". We all trooped out onto the school flat roof armed with the two gas cylinders, the washing up liquid and a waste paper bin. Needless to say, in the words of a Richard Hammond, That went well!! We managed to dent the roofing felt and wreck the bin. He was a real sport but we actually learnt loads!!

Re: Pickled Egg Quiz
One of our science lessons was chrome plating, quickly followed by local shopkeepers complaining that schoolboys were passing plated old halfpennies off as shillings.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

Re: Pickled Egg Quiz
are you ready in the bar?,
are you ready in the lounge?
are you ready in the snug?
Have a go at this....
No holds barred, easy enough to find out what this is with the minimum of skulduggery, not many will know off the top of their heads. Interesting story.
Regards Neil
