Watched the Maserati bi turbo job on tv yesterday, interesting but I dozed off before they got round to trying to sell it.

That's weird, I went to look for that from your note above and it's all there but it's all ass about face.

Re: Electric Vehicles: What have you spotted?
Worked for me gibbo, just clicked on it and away it went. Some Vids on there do occasionally play oddly. EG I have seen dads army episodes where the captions etc are in reverse, and the planes on the opening credits go the "wrong way".

Re: Electric Vehicles: What have you spotted?
Oh No. Watched that Top Gear. Thought it would be a shout at the Telly fest which in reality it was...but......
shame on me, I was involuntarily laughing not just once but quite a bit with the ridiculous slapstick capers in the 3 supposedly leccy sports cars on a budget. Never found Clarkson/Hammond and May remotely funny but McGuinness and Flintoff are and I'm warming slightly to Harris too!
Danny Boyle and Himesh Patel were good too and their film "Yesterday" sounds good to me.
To be honest I found the "serious motor journalism bit" ie the review and test of the Tesla model 3 to be the worst bit. As usual totally irrelevant "tests" of speed and handling on a race track.

Re: Electric Vehicles: What have you spotted?
Funny you say that. Obviously the tarted up Leaf was an electric car (and a pretty run down with a stuffed battery by the looks of it) but someone over on speakev looked up the license plates of both of the other cars that were "converted" on DVLA and found they both still legally say petrol.... and since any coversion like that is notifiable before driving on public roads either Topgear was breaking the law driving the cars on public roads, or they didn't actually convert them and just added sound effects to pretend they had... (In fact if you listen to the dialogue carefully they hint at the Subaru still having a petrol engine - although implying that it has both a petrol engine and electric motor...)NewcastleFalcon wrote: ↑24 Jun 2019, 10:18 Oh No. Watched that Top Gear. While I thought the review of the Model 3 was "OK" for a died in the wool anti-EV petrol head, I think it's pretty sad and pathetic that they had to literally move the goalposts from 1/4 mile to 1/2 mile to let the petrol car win - and only by a car length... 1/4 mile is the gold standard for drag racing cars - nobody uses 1/2 mile. If it had won at 1/2 mile would they have made it 1 mile ?
The reality is that the Model 3 trounced all the other cars on the 1/4 mile by an embarising margin and was still out accelerating them up to about 120 mph, nearly double the national speed limit. Only then did one of them manage to reel it back in. Keep in mind that the Model 3 performance without spoiler is software limited to 140mph, while the Model 3 performance with spoiler has the software speed limit raised to 164mph - I didn't catch whether the one on test had the "spoiler" or not as it's very small and subtle, not much more than a glued on platic tip on the edge of the boot so I'd have to watch the video again. But if it didn't have one (and many don't, for some reason) it could well have been hitting the 140mph software limit when the Alfa Romeo reeled it in.
Here is the timing of one for reference where the owner had the spoiler fitted after the fact and the speed limiter raised:
The strangest thing is despite saying it didn't like the handling of the Model 3 he later tweeted a back handed compliment and said he was buying one!

Re: Electric Vehicles: What have you spotted?
Well, I know this may be in the wrong thread, but Sussex University have developed new technology that allows them to see how a battery is behaving using a sensor mounted on the outside;

"Charging the 7.6kWh battery from the mains provides a 25-mile pure electric range, in theory. Once your e-juice runs dry, there’s a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo engine to keep you motoring, and recharge the battery in combination with kinetic energy captured from braking.
Mini claims it’s the perfect car for zero emissions urban commuting during the week, and long-distance cruising at the weekend."

Re: Electric Vehicles: What have you spotted?
I am just watching a program on the Yesterday Channel, "Secrets of the Railways", about the Kiruna Iron Ore Mine (the worlds largest iron ore mine), and each train that takes the ore to Narvik is carrying enough ore to make 70,000 cars (and there are ten trains a day). The last section of the railway (to Narvik) is downhill, and the railway uses regenerative braking. There is so much power generated that the empty train can get back to the Swedish border on that 'reclaimed' power.
