Yep - somebody has been in there and drilled it out - exactly as Richard says, so forget passing the MOT in this state.

Very important that you first get the DPF replaced, then you need to get to a Citroen dealer and explain that you discovered that your vehicle has had the DPF drilled out and possibly the ECU file map altered. Tell them you have replaced the DPF and require the ECU software to be re-downloaded. This should overwrite the altered map back to what it should be. When they do this for you, make sure that they inform the ECU that the DPF has been replaced, under the repair / replacement menu. That will ensure the ECU knows that the filter is new and also the additive injected into the filter quantities should be zeroed too - but this might be automatic once the ECU is informed of the DPF replacement - I can't be sure on that part.

This is what I think we are discovering slowly here - this is not the first post where black smoke is reported on a DPF equipped (supposedly) vehicle.

Depending on what butchery has been done to the system it shouldn’t be as expensive to sort out as bandied aboout.

DPFs can be had at a fraction of the dealer price. Admittedly there will be a diagnostic charge from the dealer as these software updates have to be downloaded from PSA servers directly. So that should not be more than £90 for an hour of time. There were scare stories of figures in the £2000 mark to rectify, but that will be dealer prices and fitting and such like.

A busines opportunity for someone - DPF re-enabling ! If a backstreet guy can remap the ECU to delete a DPF, then they can do the same to put it back :-D
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

I'm not sure how this passed MOT last time then....must have been in the same condition the last time. Just for clarity I'm in Republic of Ireland. Maybe test is different? On fail sheet it said smoke 9.9 and the lad that did the test said it was off the range of the machine ( no temp reading on result sheet though) However, the engine was not as hot as I'd have liked. When I dropped it in it was hot but was left outside the test centre for at least 30mins as they were behind on tests that day.

Could be a different test in the ROI. But the tests just got a lot more stricter here with limits reduced for smoke - as in DPF vehicles aren't allowed any visible smoke.
