The gases cool very quickly to the ambient air temperature, and their densities (at 20°C) are as follows:
Air 1.205 kg/m³
CO2 1.842
NO (nitric oxide) 1.249
NO2 (nitrogen dioxide) 1.45
So all three of these will tend to sink to ground level, being denser than normal air.
Particulate matter will be heavier than any of these.
The answer then, as I said before is to suck it down into the rainwater drains and blow it away to distant clean up points. (Where's Mr. Dyson?)

Re: Dump Your Deezel
No need, if denser than air why would it (they?) stop at ground level when there were drain gratings? Indeed, given the number of gratings, cellar hatches & other openings (not to mention Tube entrances) why/how is there any of this stuff above ground at all?

VW move on
VW sales in the US bouncing back?
They are doing what no other traditional automaker is doing in the US (advertising electric cars), kicking off in the middle of the NBA playoffs...Simon and Garfunkel fans will enjoy the soundtrack....

Re: Dump Your Deezel
How about the thoughts of Ola Källenius?
Ola who? Well he is the CEO of a very large global company, which traces its roots back to the very beginnings of motoring.
Could be a case of "well he would say that wouldn't he?" or maybe he just has a lot of R&D, engine manufacturing plants, and stocks of cars/trucks/buses to sell, or maybe he really is backing the right horse.
Make your own mind up

Actually I think CNG from bio-derived methane would be the cleanest of all.
The trouble for us is no cars on sale here yet, and only 6 or 8 forecourts so far.

Been in the news so just to keep the thread current
Bristol clean air diesel ban plan approved
Apparently Bristol is going to be the first, not for another 2 years, and subject to government approval, and upgrades to the city’s ANPR network, road marking and signage necessary to its successful operation.
Regards Neil

Nor me, and it's not too far from me, they have though got the out of town Cribbs Causeway shopping Mall and around it many more out of town shop/businesses.
Close the city altogether for vehicles...………………………...and people, that'll clean it up.
I've been looking at smaller cars to replace the C5 estate, one of those is a Nissan Note 1.5 dci (diesel) which comes into the £ zero road tax category there's a contradiction in there somewhere, zero rate emissions but banned from the city because it's diesel.

...and they wonder why shops are closing and the high streets are full of empty units / charity shops...
The idiotic knee-jerk reaction taken by the jobsworths who stated diesels "regardless of age" will be included. That's all the cleaner DPF and SCR fitted models that emit no smoke and no particles (99.9%) that also eliminates 90% of NOx with CO2 down another 2-4%.

Re: Dump Your Deezel
Can't remember where I saw it but there was a chart of relative pollution levels, industry and particularly power generation being by far the worst and petrol/diesel cars at the bottom of the chart with the exception of SUVs.
While I agree that electric cars have a lot going for them I am unconvinced that they are as good as claimed considering the pollution caused by the generation of electricity - currently - and the increased demand that they cause, combined with the pollution caused in the building of them.
Just shifting the problem out of sight of the majority.

As Kevin Turvey so eloquently put it.....
'Pollution.
Sometimes up,
Sometimes down,
But always - Around!'

Re: Dump Your Deezel
When are they going to fit catalytic converters on all the country's gas central heating, which emits about twice as much oxides of nitrogen than diesel cars?
Even worse in central London, 38% of NO2 comes from heating.

Re: Dump Your Deezel
Is that true?
I do know that installers/service engineers have to check emissions on recent boilers - mine is too old for that (but on it's last legs.)
My son's has two ports to introduce sensors into the exhaust flow, as does my son in laws and the one in the house they rent out.
Also my other two daughters.
Other son I don't know, haven't been there since Malcolm's funeral.
