Yes, that's a C5 (X7) 5 DOOR ESTATE 2.0 HDi 163 PEF (DW10CTED4) Manual gearbox 6 Paul.

There's no navigation system, it has a standard RD4 Head unit, Halogen headlamps, monochrome Display, but has electric seats etc.

PEF. That's a new one on me. FAP - yes. DPF - yes. But never PEF before.

We know it more commonly as DPF Diesel Particulate Filter, but in French they are called FAP - (Filtre à Particules), which translated back to English is PEF Particle Emission Filter :-D

Because I'm looking to import to Ireland, CO 2 emissions make a big difference.
eg. The manual version of the C5 tourer (160) is 133 g/km, whereas the auto version is 163 g/km.
However, The difference in road tax is €280 v €570 p.a. And there's also VRT (vehicle reg tax) which is emissions based.

So now I know I'm looking for a 2009 on wards C5 HDI Tourer exclusive (160)

Sounds like you are looking at an X7 (MkIII), if so be sure to factor in replacing/reconditioning the steering rack every couple of years.

Hi Homer,

Thanks for the heads up on the steering rack. It sounds like you've already had this issue yourself.
(I had to replace the steering rack in my old Xantia exclusive, but then it had 217k miles up!)
Is this a known fault with them?

Cheers,
Paul

Yes on the X7 they are one of the most common things to go wrong - I am on my third one, as are many other owners.... never had a rack replaced on any vehicle to date and then 3 on this one vehicle - an obvious flaw in the design for the one fitted to the X7.

Hi Marc,

Something curious arose when I went about organising insurance cover on the car. It seems that the Irish registration lists it as a (138) and in order
to avoid any insurance problems in the event of a claim, I just want to be sure of the cars spec. So, I just wanted to double check with you before I go about amending things that it is actually a 163 hp.

Btw, do you know if there is any way of distinguishing this from the car itself? (I haven't received the the Irish log book back yet)

Many thanks,
Paul

Yes, confirmed, it is a C5 (X7) 5 DOOR ESTATE 2.0 HDi 163 PEF (DW10CTED4) Manual gearbox 6.

Be very careful, as the emissions for the 138 are higher - so if you are taxed according to emissions in Ireland like over here, it will be wrong.

The insurance is also incorrect - the earlier models are a 138 or 140 BHP, yours is a 163 DW10CTED4 engine not the DW10BTED4 version which is the earlier one.

Thanks Marc,

That's reassuring to hear. It's obviously a clerical error though, as the tax disc on the car is at €280, which is only applicable to certain versions of the 163 hp. The insurers have said not to worry that they go by the reg, however, life experience has taught me otherwise. I can envision an accessor in the event of an accident, gleefully claiming the hp higher than was insured and voiding the policy, so it's something I need to rectify.

It's dissapointing to hear that you've had to replace the steering rack 3 times . . . . once in a cars lifetime should have been enough. It sounds like the replacements racks haven't been modified. Anyway, forewarned is forearmed! I'll try not to go round too many corners!! :-D

Cheers,
Paul

I can tell you that obviously the first rack was OEM as fitted at the factory and the second rack was fitted by Citroen (revised part) under warranty, and that failed 2 years later. So this time the rack is a reconditioned and protected one that has had all the seals done internally and has been coated with anti rust paint. It was an exchange one guaranteed 3 years and was a quarter of the price of a brand new Citroen one. I also had a rubber boot placed over the pinion to afford some protection from water sitting int he well and causing the seals to go when rust sets in.

On the insurance front, I agree 100%, anything to cop out of paying up. It's the same as the no claims discount - some only give you the max 9 years - which I refuse to accept when I leave. So if I provide NCD of 14 years say, and leave after a year I expect a letter to say I had 14 years at start of policy and a further year claim free with that insurer. Some don't like to do it as it's extra hassle and read from a script that they don't do it. When I state that this would be inaccurate and effectively a lie, which I cannot accept - I ask to be put through to complaints or a senior manager and sure enough within minutes they agree and I get a letter stating the accurate NCD.

So, rust is the real enemy? I might try to cover the rack with grease when I can get it on a ramp.
Funny enough, down through the years most of the successful repairs that I've had have been with donor parts.

It defies logic, but changing to the C5 has saved me about €700 a year in costs. (The Xantia's insurance was about €600 & tax was €710 (€200 per Q)
Whereas, the C5 has comp cover for €400 & tax is €280 p.a.) I probably should have changed years ago, but was sentimental about the old Xantia.
Come to think of it, I was the same with the BX's, I never thought the Xantias would be as good.

Anyway, glad that I changed!
Cheers,
Paul

Hi Marc,
Unfortunately, it looks like I might be joining the 'steering rack replacement club.' After a few 'faulty suspension' dash warnings, my mechanic tells me there's an lds leak from the steering rack. I note from the above that you were happier with the reconditioned exchange model. Having had all the experiences that you've had with steering rack replacement, what do you regard as the best solution? I reckon that I have maybe a few weeks topping up with lds, but would prefer to deal with it asap. 3 year warranty & quarter the price sounds very appealing!

Many thanks,
Paul
