Well Ford's engine plant at Bridgend joins our pretty negative list.

Apparently there may be a spark of positivity in Norfolk although the internet has gone a bit quiet about it since this article in 2018 from Autocar. Are we forever going to be fairly decent at R&D but fail to scale up into mass manufacturing?

Ford likely to close Bridgend plant too - "Investment in a new Dragon petrol engine was scaled back, while production of an engine for Jaguar Land Rover is due to end this year."

It's not just the Ford workers in Bridgend who will be losing their jobs, the Ford plant in Bordeaux will close and there will be thousands of job cuts in Ford Germany as well. Oversupply of car manufacturing and the move to electric are the main causes, and there will undoubtedly be more job cuts to come in the car manufacturing sector

Re: Honda/JLR/Ford/Nissan/Toyota/BMW et cetera
And this shows that R&D into engines is planned years before - but the engines have become obsolete in the interim and have not kept pace with changing markets. It's the way it is and I totally agree - over supply of vehicles - anyone with a dose of common could see it coming - no good them harping on about it - it's an inevitability of over production.
They should keep making spare parts for the existing cars we have and make them last a bit longer - that would help the supply chains. The vast majority of people are NOT going to go out and buy an overpriced 'environmentally unfriendly produced' battery on wheels overnight.

That Equipmake motor looks quite something, and would be nice to think that there could be some UK business to be had from the EV market.
Ford only have themselves to blame, I'm afraid, for not preparing for the downfall in ICE - it's not as if the writing wasn't on the wall. PSA took long enough for the penny to drop, but what were Ford up to? Just one more bit of old American engineering losing out to new technology elsewhere. It's the non-US workers and the community I feel sorry for, but why would they care about that?

Indeed.
Elon Musk's original intent was to stimulate established car manufacturers to adopt electric technology and manufacturing.
It hasn't worked too well up to now and panic is setting in.

It's not just Ford and the other car manufacturers that are being caught out, there's an awful lot of people - some, dare I say it, on FCF - that don't have much of an idea of what the future will bring. The world is changing.... it's just it's changing at a faster rate than most expected

I think it's more a case of the Koreans can do it better and cheaper than any overproduction in the West or even Japan, everybody in the world still wants to own a car and they're not bothered about being green so long as it's affordable.
The Greens and environmental taxation in the West are probably the cause of the demise of the car industry in the West.

Here's your Global Car Sales data. Where would you build your factories if you were a car maker? The biggest car factory of them all is currently at Ulsan in South Korea. Free trade deal with the EU, and apparently shipping costs aren't expensive enough to kill the export business.

We probably need more years of those charts Neil to see what the position really is.
It's a fact that the UK for instance has good and bad years for car sales, that chart shows sales down 6% in 2018 but when the fleets/personal hire cars get to three or four years old it could be 10% up.

Sorry, I no longer watch the BBC - it is one of the worst broadcasters, has some of the most disgraceful and obnoxious 'presenters' and should be scrapped as unfit for public consumption IMO. Once you start getting your info from around the world form multiple other media sources and broadcasters, it's what the BBC choose not to broadcast that is an eye opener and has far too much power in the UK. The sooner it is broken up the better.
