How do the old and the new compare when side by side, can you see a difference?

Maybe just the gaiter is wrong.

If the driveshaft is the correct length but has a thicker shaft and a bigger CV maybe it is from a diesel or more powerful petrol variant?

There seem to be quite a few wrongly labelled driveshafts out there, but it would seem that you need the one that narrows towards the CV joint as per the picture. That narrowing allows the ARB to not foul the shaft.

Yes, Item 2 in the diagram shows the narrowing clearly as compared to the left hand one (item 1), so one assumes that mist have a different ARB layout so is not required.

Thank you all for your input. What a ballache this has all been hahah, so i tried to recondition the old shaft and when i cut off the gaiter the end of the CV joint fell away, something i had not seen or heard of before   its held on by a very specific fitting of the inner CV boot that seems to hold the joint together, meaning the POS universal boot was never going to work. Also it was far too wide at the narrow end and didnt seal properly around the shaft. So ive had to say eff it and driven the car to garage on the new DS. On the ground the clearance is plenty between the ARB and the gaiter i just think on any extreme tilt itll rub and probably enough to rip it, so i think ill be needing an OEM shaft or at least the right CV boot for the original. Does anyone know tho will OEM CV boots go on over a cone? or would i have to pull and reseat the CV joint?

So just to effectively tie up this thread.

I lowered the car back down and checked the clearance and it was ok, put a filled plastic bottle between the two with a pin hole in the top and bounced it, checked for spray and no spray. Garage looked said they didnt see an issue gave it a MOT. So i've sprayed a little yellow paint on the DS under the gaiter and will drive for a while then check for paint on the gaiter or signs of rub.

seems ok!
