Scrapping my Citroen C8

Post by Sid Tran »

It has proven impossible to source the replacement part needed to repair my lovely C8, so it seems that I have nowhere to turn but to arrange for it to be scrapped.

Not having done anything like this before, I am following the guidance on the DVLA website and have so far accomplished the following

- transferred my car insurance policy to the new car (Citroen C1)

- registered my C8 as off the road (SORN) and it is now sitting in the driveway

- taken the private registration number off and transferred it to the V778 retention document

- received the new log book V5C which shows the replacement registration number LL53***

I understand that I can now arrange for the car to be taken to an authorised treatment facility (ATF). As the C8 is off the road, I shall need to have it collected.

My questions are

- do I need to have new numberplates LL53*** made up and installed before it is taken to the ATF?

- I have read that I should expect to be paid by the ATF for the car. How much is this likely to be? £50, more or less?

- Are there any alternative strategies that I should consider?

I saw last night on webuyanycar that the estimated value ranges from £250 to £700 depending on whether the car is running.

It certainly starts up and can run - it's just that the engine coolant leaks out from the split / ruptured pipe

That leaking pipework would be repairable by someone determined to do it, and if the car is otherwise in a good state, it seems a shame to scrap it.
Unsure of what it might fetch, so WBAC's figure might/might not be attractive.
You could offer the car for sale here..

Hello Chris!

I'd really, really love for someone to repair it.

If there's anyone out there...

How much would you be looking for it? My collection is full so I'm just asking in general!

Hello Paul!

To be completely truthful, I'd never thought about selling it as I like the car so much and was anticipating running it until I'd be forced to let it go - due to not being able to repair it, or it being uneconomical to retain (I am in London, so I can no longer drive the C8 into the central zone without paying the daily ULEZ charge).

If someone wanted to repair it and keep it going for a bit longer, putting it to good use, I'd be delighted.

Regarding costs, if I can't use it then it's value to me would be the equivalent of scrappage. I am unable to realise any value of the car in terms of breaking up for spare parts, or repairing and selling on.

My preferences would be

1 - a kindly expert can repair the C8 and allow me to run it for another couple of years, so that I can take my family (5) and elderly parents (2) out together again.

2 - if no one can repair it for me, to pass it on to someone who wants to do it for him/herself and use/sell the car on so that it doesn't need to be scrapped. I would be hoping to be offered a fair price, understanding of course that time and money would need to be invested into the project.

3 - last option - to have it collected and sent off for scrappage

Regards,

Sid

Thank you very much for this.

It seems that to have a custom pipe made up would require a minimum order of 30 pieces.

It's very kind of you to make the suggestion though.

All best wishes,

Sid

I have seen a few others on breaking sites but not sure if they are would be similar spec engine wise, guessing that if they have sold the engine they would not have sold them with ancillaries.
Had a quick search for the part number and it comes up with Citroen and Peugeot so maybe we can extend the search a little bit wider than just the C8 if you get no joy.

I cannot believe that someone out there cannot repair the part you have, i know i am being simplistic but looking at the picture in your previous thread the damaged part seems repairable, the bend seems nothing unusual, the old trades are disappearing :(

If it comes to it, I'll buy it for more than what scrappy or WBAC will give you. I'll also repair it and use it!

Hello Colin,

I spoke with the breakers of the white Citroen C8 which you kindly pointed me to.

I'm still waiting for them to get back to me.

If they can't help, I think that I will give up and dispose of the car.

Best wishes,

Sid

Hi looking at you previous pictures/post that pipe is makeable the only issue i can see is the end to right on repaired part that butts into something but still do able.
Can get silicone hose then need the alloy step offs for the other pipes to fit to.

I'm sure someone can ferret the pictures up of where/what it butts into/upto? as that might need a modd also.

Many Rally sport/Motor sport shops/factors will be able to supply the parts like one posted above there are others that make them up as many race/rally cars are one off's not 30 of them!

Just need to be creative when enquiring!
Your not that far from me i'd be happy to help as best as can.

Also give Edwardes and Sons Billericay a ring see what mark has?

Phone number remove and PM'd - numbers on open forums are harvested by spammers

We have Burton power over by Gants hill they carry a range of pipes plus will know where/who.

Put some more detailed/closer up pictures on here so can see more detailing as could probably splice end onto something else.
