That would be the Preston By-Pass opened in December '58. Coincidentally, also the site of Britain's first contraflow..... and reduced speed limit due to workforce in road....... and 50mph speed limit for no good reason.... and miles of coned off lanes for no apparent purpose, etc, etc.....

Yes, wiki tells us it was planned as early as 1937, and a fact finding mission from Lancs CC went across to Germany in 1938 to see how it was done!

and an Austin Sheerline Limosine was the PM's carriage of choice for the opening in 1958. Huge headlights!

Thought I had read something about that, but turns out to be a complete irrelevance. It was in fact the Bertha Benz Memorial Route . German of course. So Mannheim to Pforzheim is an incorrect answer. She did have to pop to the chemist to get some Ligroin from the local chemist to fuel her journey.

I went past Micheldever Station today on my motorbike and thought I'd look up a bit of its history as there were a few buildings and structures that caught my eye. It also turns out that Micheldever Station had an army depot in WW2 that was known as 'The Woolworths depot' as they could provide almost anything that the army could conceivably need - if an item was ordered by late afternoon, then it could be in Normandy the following day.
