MG on a mission

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Bit off topic seeing as it is something that is "going to" be available from 1st September 2019, and orders open now. It is curently on show at the London Motor and Tech Show.

Its the good old British Chinese brand MG.

..and for electric vehicles after the plug in grant it starts apparently at £24,000. I do believe that SAIC with their MG Motor-UK wing, are on a mission to well and truly get their foot in the door in the UK Car Market.

It may well fit nicely into the I-Spy an Ugly SUV thread

Obviously not rolling out of their factory at Swindon, but Honda have started taking reservations for their imaginatively named "Honda e" electric car.

What a cutie! Some really nice touches of simple, restrained design.
David Bache would have approved of the dash: a rectangular module on a full-width shelf.
Even the bonnet-mounted charging hatch is Peugeot-shaped!! :P

Every time I read about a new electric car at the top end (Gearing up for Tesla’s Model 3?, 18 May), I can’t help but think about the Model T Ford. If we are to reduce levels of pollution in our towns and cities, surely we need a cheap, mass-produced electric car equivalent to the Model T, as opposed to a car produced for the executive market.

I agree with that Christine :-D

and, I personally wouldn't need all the add ons. I can read a map and the Road Atlas of Great Britain when its on offer for £1.99 sees to all my navigation needs, and I can quite happily operate the steering wheel and accelerator and brake myself.

Unfortunately looks like the new Electric Model T will come with a compulsory big brother from 2022 onwards to prevent me from speeding, and to monitor my every interaction with the vehicle, and know exactly where I am and where I have been at all times..... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-47715415.

If I was in the market for a new car I think I'd be aiming for one of these, if their production quality is as good as their petrol cars in the USA (My daughter and her husband have one each) they should be very good.

If you watched that video, the spokesman from What Car outlined an impressive case for the KIA e-niro the first electric car to become their overall car of the year. I also find out that South Korea's other major player with a well respected electric car offering Hyundai, are effectively one and the same, with the Hyundai Motor Group owning KIA. The "brands" do attempt to hit slightly different markets according to this...

I think Hyundai owns only about 30% of Kia Neil, there's been quite a bit of varied ownership (and a bankruptcy) through the years including Ford having a dabble then walking away.

Yes you are right Gibbo, and the Hyundai Motor Group still very much the largest shareholder with its 33.9% shareholding as of Dec 2018, and one of the largest individual Shareholders is also the executive vice chairman of Hyundai Motor Company.

As well as the 100% Battery EV's and their various hybrids, Hyundai are also continuing to invest in a hydrogen fuel cell cars like the Nexo, whuch I have dumped in the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Cars Still Alive? thread. By no means a "Folks Wagen" yet at that price :-D

I would have a Kia e-Niro in a heart beat.

I keep tabs on and research all the currently available and near future BEV's and of the ones currently available it's the perfect long range family car especially for someone with a young family. The 282 mile claimed range is actually realistic and there are many people who have achieved even more with careful driving.

76kW DC rapid charging and liquid cooled battery. 7 year full warranty including the traction battery and drive motor / electronics.

Plenty of rear leg room and at 451 litres, a bigger boot than my Xantia hatchback. (408 litres) 150kW and 395Nm also compares well with the Xantia V6 which is 140kW and 267Nm. (Although it's a heavier car and won't ride or handle as well as the Xantia 0-60 time is about the same - 7.8 seconds)

Of course I can't afford any new car let alone this one. But second hand at 4-5 years old, perhaps.

Hyundai owns about 33% of Kia (Kia also owns about 30% of Hyundai subsidaries... ) and they share the same drivetrains - the motor and battery etc in the Hyundai Kona and Kia e-Niro are the same - if you take the plastic engine cover off the motor in the e-Niro it says Hyundai - they didn't even bother to change the badge! In terms of platform sharing between them, it's similar to the sharing that Citroen and Peugeot do. Different body and interior styling and feature specs on top of the same platforms.

Of course the problem is the first year supply of the e-Niro is extremely limited. They're all sold out now for about 12 months... No legacy car maker is yet able to meet the demand for the EV variants of their cars. It's unclear whether this inability to meet demand is on purpose or whether they are genuinely supply constrained and/or underestimated demand.

I wonder whose power plant and batteries that one is using, under the "Vauxhall" badging?
