I've read Fowlers, Baugh & Cable and a few others in my time. Yes it's correct that we used to use -ize and exported it to America but then we moved on. We also left them with gotten and then changed that to got (but perversely kept forgotten and begotten).

I was taught -ise at school and even forty years later, when I was doing my OCR, I would be marked down if I used -ize.

In a boy's school I went to, from age eight to eleven, the headmaster would never let anyone use the word "Got" as it was such an ugly word and we had to be creative in circumventing it.
Sticks with me even now.

The Americanizatiaficaton of English is like textspeak to me, along with many popular shortcuts in the language.

Yes, we were discouraged from using got as well. We were also told it was an ugly word.

deamerikanization-assistance required

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

NewcastleFalcon wrote: 03 May 2019, 09:14 Final straw..........I need help to deamericanize my google. Never mind Huawei we have already been surreptitiously invaded by the USA and passively accepted it! ...et cetera

Pleased to see that my humble request for assistance was answered by Marc, but also that is has sparked a bit of participation.

Just to say the thread title had very little thought put into it other than to intentionally use what I thought was a fair approximation of a "Bushism" in a mildly humorous fashion. It was never intended to be "correct" in any shape or form.

I am so disappointed that it may actually be an actual word! Well Americanisation/Americanization (whatever is your preference ,is, so my deamericanisation/deamericanization may arguably also be an actual word!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americanization

Perhaps I should edit in a "K" to my original title just in case, anyone imagines, I intended to use a proper word (or spell it correctly. :-D)

Anyway just pleased to have partially de-usaified google for the time being.

Weeeell, americanisation/americanization is certainly a word but the question really is: when prefixed with de should it actually be hyphenated?

I misunderestimated how popular this thread was going to be!

I, & many others oft bemoan the increasing adoption of Americanisms in everyday English - but, surprisingly (to me, in any event) it's a 2-way traffic. Originally I noticed in a Cadillac forum the increasing use (usage?) of "our" terms, e.g. reversing, rather than back-up, lights, flashers, not turn signals but hazards, instead of 4-way flashers, also, a little curiously, they refer to disc brakes - although they call discs "rotors".

However, having recently returned I heard "text/texts/texting" for the first time, whereas previously it was always SMS, even heard "SatNav" once, rather than the universal "GPS"

That's it then, the rot has set in. Decline and fall of the American Empire imminent.
