Corded impact guns.

Post by doctle »

So I decided to get the air gun out to change the 207 shock mount bearing and mount. It speeded things up a lot and made it much easier apart from the wait whilst the air built up again. I have seen electric impact guns on the well known auction site and they look interesting starting at £80 ish. Has anyone any experience of these impact guns?

If you can I would suggest you get a cordless 1/2" impact gun. They cost a little (ahem) more but they are well worth it IMHO. It turns a half hour hassle changing a wheel into a 10 minute (almost) delight. I'm locked into AEG now - I also have a multi-use tool, a reciprocating saw and three drills (two impact and one straight) - but of course there are many other makers.

I would suggest 18v to be the minimum to get a decent torque whack on bolts and nuts.
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

I've got a Bosch 18V cordless impact and a Clarke corded impact (CEW1000) and although the Bosch is extremely useful, the Clarke wins hands down for all out torque. The Bosch will undo wheelnuts after a very short while, but the Clarke doesn't even hesitate.

Air guns need a decent throughput of air (cfm) to allow them to work.
A long small-bore supply hose can restrict this, as can inadequate line pressure.

I operate mine at about 6 bar, from a 50-litre tank, on the end of about 20m of 6mm bore pipeline. The pipe size isn't ideal, but the gun (4 torque settings) always does its stuff.

I'm not a big fan of cordless stuff I will always drill with the corded drill it doesn't need charging or replacement batteries etc. The local tyre place has a Milwaukee impact gun it is top of the line cost him close to a grand and has a GPS chip and an app if its losing power etc. It's out of my price range. I do most of my work al fresco so an extension lead and small money would be fine. Something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Clarke-CEW1000 ... B0039BQRUO

I have the proper hose but the switch on the compressor is knackered it knocks off around 4 bar so not ideal. It worked on the horrible nut holding the shock mount but its not good enough. The compressor has only been used very occasionally for a soft wheel or the grandchildrens paddling pool.

I've heard of them, but that's very much different from me saying I'd buy them 8-[

Have a look through ebay and see if you can find one that looks the same or similar, that will probably give you an idea of who makes them. Don't be put off because someone else is selling the same one for twice the price - they do that.

I've also one of each, both cheap but the cordless one out-performs the corded one - but that did come from Lidl's.

Thats a good idea Peter I will spend an hour later doing that. I have read good reviews on the Clarke tool tho some people said its large and/or heavy. I suppose I could buy a new pressure switch for the compressor however that would deprive me of a new toy! Paul
