Headlamp washers

Post by steenschalls »

Hello

My headlamp washers do not work. The F4 fuse in the engine relay box is ok and the seperate washer pump is ok too . When I test the washers with Lexia it gives permanent fault, F998, control fault? I have checked in the BSI, that configuration with headlamp washers are present. The daylight running lighst are activated as well, and so is the automatic on/off , day /night light changing. If the fault is in the engine relay box, do I have to change the whole unit? It looks as if the relays are sealed? I have tried to deactivate daylight running lights, but I still have the fault?

regards

Hi Steen (?) I've had a look at this fault for you and it seems that it will likely be a short circuit, so it has disabled the system.

Here are the fault details and likely suspects:
Fault codeF998
After sales description of the fault codeHeadlamp wash control fault
Description of the diagnosticsDetection of a short-circuit to positive or of an open circuit in non-controlled mode for more than 4 seconds
Conditions of activation of the diagnosticsIgnition switched on
Apart from in economy mode
Conditions of disappearance of the faultAbsence of a short-circuit to positive or of an open circuit
Down-grade modes if fault presentDeactivation of the headlamp wash pump control
Switching on of the warning lamp and/or warning message-
Main customer complaints likelyNo headlamp wash
Random headlamp wash
Suspect areasHeadlamp wash pump
Engine fusebox
Electrical harness (Engine fusebox - Headlamp wash pump )
I will have a look at the circuit diagram for you - but I would have a look at the wiring from the headlamp pump back tot he fusebox. It may be likely that the fault is at the pump end given that that is where all the water from the road and washing will likely get in.

Ok, so here's the wiring diagram:

5405 is the Headlamp Wash Pump.

Wire 542 is the headlamp wash pump control
M542 is the Earth

Control wire goes into the engine fuse box and into relay R11, which is controlled by Fuse 4 as you stated.

Thank you for your remarks, now I can start a proper trouble shooting. For info, I have installed a new pump. Wiring and connections are fine in this area. I have put 12V on the pump itself and everything works fine. There is no voltage on the 542 wire when the system is activated normally.

The 542 wire goes to the engine fuse box. The wire is to pin no 1 and the plug is brown with 28 pins? What does the (28) V mean?

It just means it's 28 pins - I can't remember what the V stands for - something in French meaning pin or space....

the wire diagram does not tell which criteria is needed to pull R11 in the BSM? Do you know?

The relays are integrated into the engine fusebox. If you have checked Fuse F4 and that is ok, and you have checked the earth wire M542 which goes to the body earth MC21, then you may be looking for another fuse box - Part 6500CK:

I have power at fuse F4, but no power at pin 1 wire 542 when system is activated (lights on). Seems to be too expensive to buy a new relay box, have to live without the system.
Thank you for your help.

So if you are getting no power with the lights on and the headlamp wash activated at the same time, then it looks like the relay in the fusebox. You could look for a second hand one as long as it is the exact same part number 6500CK as they are different.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news but [-X .........This may be a European Traffic offence, if your car has HID lamps then the EU say you must have working headlamp washers.

Stu - he doesn't have the Directional Xenon Discharge Headlamps - on European models they are often fitted with headlamp washers on standard Halogens - as in some European Countries they have the lights on all the time. It still may be a requirement over there for the standard headlamps for the washers to work though, but according to my information, there are no Halogens on the C5 that ever emitted over 2000 Lumens - which is the the requirement for having headlamp washers fitted regardless of type of bulb technology used. for ECE approval. So thinking about it, this probably won't be a requirement over there as they won't be anywhere near 2000 Lumens.

I only have halogen, with no requirements of a washing system. I will try to find a second hand relay box wit the correct part number
