Shell Energy.

Post by Gibbo2286 »

I've been with First Utility for my dual fuel contract for a couple of years now, it has been taken over by Shell Energy, their page might interest the alternative energy and electric car charging fans.

My youngest was with First Futility and is expecting the usual misery now Shell have taken it over.

I had to go to hers last week so they could fit a gas smart meter (she has an electric one)
Couldn't do it as the existing gas meter is wrong in so many different ways and has to be taken out and re-piped before they can continue with it.

The cynic in me says that takeover by Shell of a company offering 'renewable source' electricity — just an accountancy trick, as all power comes off the National Grid — is designed so that this Big Oil can claim to be in the renewables business!

A bit like Merc, was it?, taking on Smart, in order to have low emissions vehicles as part of their line-up, without which they could no longer sell in California.

Cynic? Oui.

I got smart meters for both gas and electric from First Utility without any hassle Steve.

The other thing mentioned on the Shell page is that they're going to offer home chargers for electric cars which is really why I posted about it.

The problem was that her gas & electricity supply is from the fifties and incompatible with recent stuff, also the gas meter fitting is illegal by current standards.
British Gas will have to fix it before a smart meter can be installed.

Most of the houses where she lives are the same - all the ones that haven't already ben altered.

When I bought my business back in the sixties there was no gas (still isn't in that village) and the electrics were primitive to say the least. :)

There were half a dozen old crock fuse boxes and wiring of all different colours.

We had smoke coming from behind the shop shelves and a stink of burning rubber, I took the shelves out and found that someone had added a power fuse box to the old lot and linked to it with some old cotton covered lighting flex, we were running two shop freezers and a couple of infra red heaters off cable designed for a 40 watt bulb.

The plumbing was the same, a bit of copper pipe a bit of iron pipe joined into a bit of plastic pipe and the property mains earth fastened somewhere in the middle..

Much like the bodge in my daughter's house - two different sets of wiring colours and an interesting blend of wired fuses, cartridge fuses and MCBs. Water piping a pigs ear too.

She will get a new consumer unit soon but also needs a new composite door to replace the rotting wooden one, a new boiler and more.
Always something to add to the list.

Fortunately she has a decent job, is quite thrifty and has trained herself to be quite handy with DIY.

Well, with the changes in energy prices (and certain tariffs ending) they are going up unless people start shopping around. This is because 102 fixed term schemes end today. The biggest increase today is from Shell Energy, who will transfer people to a standard rate that is (according to the BBC) 43% higher!

I'm on an eighteen month fixed price contract at the moment and as always when that's due to end I'll be looking for another 'best deal'

I've been paying £44 a month direct debit for my energy, both gas and electric, last week I checked the balance and found I was £366 in credit so I've had £250 of that refunded to my bank account...……...took just four days.

I have solar panels and they seem to be paying handsomely, I calculated that it would take eight or nine years to pay off the cost but it now looks more like six years and the government scheme guarantees payment of the feed in tariff for twenty years.
