Insurance Renewal Madness

Just had my renewal offer through from Adrian Flux. Been looking forward to ditching them for the last couple of years as they were charging way over the odds. However as I was always firefighting at renewal time it never got to the front of the queue - though I've made sure to pay attention this year.

1996 Xantia Activa.
7K/year.
Social & pleasure use as I don't commute.
Manual boost controller and V6 spec brake upgrades declared (three times now as they keep losing that information).
Parked off street on a private driveway with CCTV coverage.
Clean driving licence.
No claims at all (not even glass) in the last five years. Last was a windscreen back in 2008 I think.
NCB maxed out.

Oh, and they've removed the driving other vehicles provision as well.

The going rate seems to be £300-400...but that's just madness!

Will be greatly enjoying telling them to get lost. Though I do admit to being really curious to see what would happen if I were to phone up and get a "new" quote for an identical car at a nearby address. Not saying I'm going to do anything with it - their service has been shocking so I'm moving insurers anyway - I'm just really curious to see if a price half of the renewal turns up...

You really do have to shop around these days. It's second nature now every year. We use the comparison sites that contain most of the insurers and mine has been reducing each year I'm glad to say.

I've been unable to get better than Direct Line in the last couple of years for both car and home insurance, (I shop around every year.) they actually reduced the car premium this year without prompting although I still think it's too much.

We are a four car family - shortly to become five because I'm just in the process of handing my one-owner Saxo run-about to my grandson, and replacing it with a C1. I've had him on my Saxo insurance for the past 18months, but I thought it best for him to start his own policy. Therefore I've been looking for a policy for a 2011 C1 VTR+ on a few of the comparison sites. Surprisingly on each site, an Axa policy always came up as the lowest. But the surprising thing was that each site offered the policy at a different price. So by signing up through Confused.com rather than Gocompare, I saved £40.

It's coming up to time for my car insurance renewal and I've had a couple of email offers already. Still not had a renewal notice from my current insurer (does anyone else have a problem remembering the name of who they're with?) so I don't know what I'm comparing against yet. It's been a long, long time since I didn't change company every year and I usually have to set aside a good afternoon to get my best price.

I follow the MoneySavingExpert formula and I'm hoping that the renewal quote will arrive soon so that this year I can get my quotations back in the sweet spot about three weeks before renewal date. Since retiring I also find I'm doing less mileage in my car so I'll be reducing the risk from 12,000 miles to 7,000 miles - something I should have done last year really.

Mine is up for renewal in a couple of weeks. LV have reduced it for the second year running, low enough so I wasn't going to bother searching (£267)

Oh the AA - I can go one better than that Steve!

Went to get a quote for my petrol turbo XM Prestige - the time before there were that many comparison sites. Got a telephone quote, max no claims, fully comp and wait for it £2500! Suffice it to say I told them to put their quote where the sun don't shine.

Went with Privilege Insurance (part of Direct Line at some point) and their quote was £298 IIRC.

It is about 25 years since I last had a quote from the AA as they were always more expensive that other options. Direct Line and Saga too.
AA still send an email every year.

I used to have insurance with the AA and about 4 years ago it trebled. I went online to AA insurance and got a cheaper quote than Id paid the year before. Insurance prices in Ireland have gone crazy years ago I applied to pay monthly and was refused as the total came to €280 fully comp driving other cars full windscreen cover etc. I had to take out phone and handbag cover to get it over €300 and that was for an A4 1.9 tdi. 6 years later my 1.4 diesel is €600 for TPFT with a €300 excess 8000 km no commuting. If my policy was any more basic it would be written on recycled hardboard.

My son uses mine, mainly at night to go to work. It is only four miles but no public transport at that time and he doesn't want to take his motorbike.
It is kept in a secure car park but there is no option for me to put that in, oddly enough the address isn't recognised although it is adjacent to a huge child benefit office, among others.
So I have to say it is parked on the street.
Fortunately a very low crime area, there hasn't been a car stolen here for around thirty years.

I always check the comparison sites as I did this year, but Direct line who I have been with for the last two or three years was still cheaper than any of the on line quotes. My Merc had gone up to £350 but it was still over £50 cheaper than Confused.com, maybe something to do with me being 80 now. My wife's insurance on the 406 was about £230.

The headline in this article reads....

Can't vouch for whether they used the scientific method or not, but intuitively it wouldn't surprise me. Little claims history at the moment from a small population of EV drivers, compared to the vast amounts of info accumulated for the ICE driver.

Would not be surprised either if insurance became bundled up with the "purchase package" for new EV's. Optional it would have to be of course, but and manufacturers could easily negotiate a competitive deal with a major insurer which would be hard to beat....unless they became a little greedy with a bit of commission on the side.

Wonder if this guy is phoning his insurance company. He will be explaining....yes thunderstorm/flash flood unavoidable...had to drive through it and car engine has gon kaput.

They might be saying to him, was there a weather warning, was the entire road flooded, or did you choose to drive through the floodwater...unfortunately you aren’t covered.
