Hello
I wonder if someone can help me with this fault?. Started the car from cold the engine it was a little lumpy at first but idled ok. Then the engine Management fault light came on and the radiator electric cooling fan came on at full speed. I switched the engine off but the cooling fan stayed on for a least ten minutes even though the engine was cold.
I know I need to get a code reader to tell me what has been logged as a fault but would I be right in thinking it could be a faulty coolant senor in the thermostat housing. Although I woundn't know which one it is as there are two!
I have read in Mini forums (same engine) this could be the problem.
Any help would be appreciated.
Brian

Re: Citroen C5 1.6 THP Petrol 2012 Engine Management Light On
Those are pretty much the symptoms I had a week ago when a coil pack failed. If the engine is running rough with no power, I would suspect an ignition coil.
After replacing a coil, the engine ran fine and the fan behaved itself, but the EML did not go off until the fault code was cleared from the ECU.

Thanks for the reply. The engine was a little lumpy when it first started but ran fine after about 30 seconds. Also the radiator fan came on right away and and stayed on even when I turned the cold engine off. This has never happened before. I would have thought if a coil was faulty that this would make no differnce to the fan coming on!
I will try and get a local garage to put a fault code reader on to it rather than pay the main Citroen dealer who wants 90 pounds for this!!
Thanks for your advice

The fan comes on at full speed as soon as a serious engine fault of any kind is detected. You really can't do anything until you have some fault codes to work with. For a serious engine fault like this you should get a fairly good initial diagnosis from a generic reader, but if the fault still isn't obvious, then you may need to find someone with a Diagbox tool.

Re: Citroen C5 1.6 THP Petrol 2012 Engine Management Light On
Hello Xantia_v6
I took the C5 to a local garage for them to do a dianostic check to see what fault codes had been logged. Before doing this I unplugged the electric fan as it runs constantly at high speed.
The following two fault codes were found under "Engine Management":-
Code P1336 Combustion Misfiring (impact On Catalytic Converter) : Cylinder Undertermined
Code P1338 Combustion Misfiring (Impact On Catalytic Converter) : No 2 Cylinder.
The garage cleared the codes and the car got me home 3 miles away without the fault re-ocurring.
So your advice was spot on. Tomorrow I will get a new coil for number 2 cylinder and a new set of spark plugs (the originals have done 30 thousand miles) and hopefully there will no more problems.
There are only two additional things I need to know
1. What is cylinder is No1. Is it the flywheel/gearbox end ?
2. Do you know by chance who makes the coils for Citroen (Bosh, Delphi) as I can get them fo a good price compared to Citroen.
Once again many thanks for your help on this matter.

Cylinder 1 appears to be at the flywheel end.
The original coils on my car were made by Delphi.

Hello Xantia-v6
Changed the spark plugs and replaced the coil (with a Citroen one) on number two cylinder. Have done about 80 miles with no problems.
Thanks again for your help

Re: Citroen C5 1.6 THP Petrol 2012 Engine Management Light On
Strangely , I have asked some people where is no.1 cylinder? on my C4Picasso B78 1.6thp 2015. Seems that it is a puzzle, Brian C5 found, as mensioned inhere, 1 is at the flywheel end! Well when I have my scanner connected e.g. on injection timing, I find a difference in value on cyl. no 1, at the chain end!!xantia_v6 wrote: 17 Apr 2019, 20:05 Cylinder 1 appears to be at the flywheel end.

I know this is the Citroen way, owner since 20+ years, but since this engine also is used in BMW and MINI, question is, have they adopted the C way or do they have it as many other do, in the chain side? Refer to my start post?..
