I always remember being amazed that Scottish ambulances were limo based, when I was used to CV based ones in England [with the singular exception of the Daimlers the L(ondon)C(ounty)C(ouncil) had].

Ambulances were popular bases for camper conversions, even those dreadful old translucent fibreglass BMC jobs, but the modern box van style emergency response vehicle seems to have put an end to that; made me realise how few few ambulances which are basically minibuses with black windows & battenberg paint you actually see nowadays.

Well I didn't see any Sheerlines, etc 'til we got to Scotland - & the distinction clearly made such an impression on me that it's stuck in my mind as peculiarly Scottish - b-t-w, was Sheffield really in the Midlands then?

Couldn't help but notice the Surrey reg, could that've been where the coachbuilders were?

Curious that:-
(a) DS ambulances were, invariably, coachbuilt, when the Safari only really needed a raised roof
(b) later Tissiers were so clumsy looking, when the 6-wheeled CX's were really rather elegant (as indeed were the DS paper vans)

:rofl2: No I just used the first image I found to show a Sheerline.

Back then the Austin company supplied the Birmingham ambulance service with a mobile operating theatre......One to look up Neil. :)
