Thornton Le Dale North Yorkshire a few miles on from Pickering on the Scarborough road. Very picturesque and home to Mathewsons Classic Auctions.

One of my favourite places although I have only been once, about eight years ago, in 56 years.
Used to be there once a month during early teens.

Reading Services?

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

....nice place to stop off at in May each year anyway if you have an interest in one of the disappearing sounds of the British Countryside, and unlikely ever to be heard in Berkeley Square again.

Yes I was surprised when Reading Services Featured on Springwatch recently with this..

Gary Moore: In search of the Nightingale

Not surprising when you know that the nearby Theale and Burghfield Gravel Pits support 100 pairs of Nightingales, one of the most important populations in the UK.
I came across this to find out more, and find that part of the site is under threat from nearby plans for Housing Development.

https://britishbirds.co.uk/article/bb-e ... ng-system/

"In 2016, a planning application was made for 225 new homes, of which 24 were to be ‘can float’ homes along one shore of Main Pit, while the remainder were to form a conventional housing estate on land in the northwest corner of the site. At first sight this seems an odd place for such a development. Quite apart from its importance for wildlife, the site lies in a flood plain, and access to Reading, the nearest major town, is via one of two single-track bridges. The scheme was rejected by the local planning authority at the first stage of the process under the Local Plan for identifying suitable sites for residential development. However, Prudential Assurance paid over £3 million for the site in 2006,.....

Well a long way from me, but unusual location to stop off at, and a friend of mine did an afternoon tea there and loved it....in spite of shelling out £60!

Have to admit, I have no idea whether this is a nice place to stop off at or not, but today would be the perfect day to have a token visit.

...and should it have a jukebox the most appropriate track to select would be??????

Not a lot of people know that!

......Or you could take a wander down to the sunny delights of Peacehaven and have a look where the Greenwich Meridian departs our southern shores :)

Well I did say on POTD that the Drift Cafe at Cresswell Northumberland should be on this thread so here it is. Chocolate Brownie was absolutely excellent today gluten free too, and indistinguisable from the finest brownie of any recipe. and a mere 4 miles from the free charger at Newbiggin Sports Centre. :-D
NewcastleFalcon wrote: 11 Oct 2019, 19:59 South East Northumberland is the most populated part of the County very much formerly associated with Mining, but only 4 miles out out Ashington you get the coastline like this. I'm obviously biased but it is gorgeous.

The Excellent Drift Cafe at Cresswell a mere half a mile away, should be on the "Nice Places to stop off at" thread!

Rediscovered Berwick-Upon-Tweed today. There's the Elizabethan Walls, and the Border Bridge carrying the East Coast Main Line over the Tweed as on my contribution to POTD. Down by the river and the street behind it many interesting independant shops and coffee and cake shops, and for the electric vehicle driver....welcome to northumberland......2 free fast chargers one up at the Swan Centre and one at Chapel Street just behind the high street :-D .

Nice Link With LS Lowry too who was a regular visitor to the town and painted many street scenes of the town.
