I only realised just how old this thread was after I'd posted to it (D'oops!).
Interesting to hear that it's still using oil at such a rate. I think I've only ever had one car that has ever needed topping up between 5000 mile services. If it's still running OK, I'd be inclined to do what you mentioned before, and chop it in for a diesel. At least then a car that sounds like a diesel will actually have the fuel economy of one!

I was going to see what the local rip off car trader would give me for it, trouble is that i like my ebay bargains!, so i will probably sell it there with the faults described properly as i dont really like misleading people,
You might have noticed that i have bought a cheap alfa 156 selespeed, if i get it running ok i have decided that i will get it lpg converted and run that about for a while, i still want an XM and they dont come up very often at a price that i can afford so i can drive the alfa till i find the right xm

the next obvious step would be to bo a cylinder leakage test.
this will tell you if its a burnt out valve, piston rings etc.
alot of the early 1.8 16v,s drank oil like no bodies business.are there any tell tale signs of oil on the spark plugs?.this will tell you which cylinder/s is playing up.

The plugs are fine, i changed them recently and looked carefully at the old ones and the haynes manual pictures and came to the conclusion that they were normal,
I'm not too worried about the oil consumption now as i am buying tesco's cheapest oil and it really isnt costing me much to top it up now anyway,
I have checked and double checked for leaks and drips and there are none worth mentioning,
I can notice that the car is getting a little smokey now though, you can see a slight trail under hard acceleration and on the overrun it can puff it out

many years ago i had a sierra 1.8 CVH,that used oil and smoked, someone recommended that i used a certain brand of oil.on the label it claimed to stop worn engines from smoking.i thought it was a gimmick as usual but i tried it.after a few days it stopped smoking.dont know how or why!!
the only trouble is i cant remember the brand of oil.have a scout around some local motor factors, youll be amazed at some products they stock!

Interesting, I have seen the oil yoiu are talking about and really didnt think it would do what it said, plus it was quite expensive too,
I will get some next time i am down there and give it a try, cant really hurt things with the state of the engine now
Thanks
