C4 VTS 2.0 16V Oil consumption

Hi

What is the normal oil consumption for C4 VTS 2.0 16V ( 180 HP ) ? My car has 290,000 KM ( no oil leaks ) and the oil consumption is 1Kg for 5700 KM. Is that normal ?

Indeed, but an interesting read, considering what some manufacturers class using a (US) quart of oil (circa 1Lt) as normal oil consumption over 1000 miles! I can’t get my head around that to be honest, maybe they are talking for the first few thousand miles of an engine, otherwise it’ll be using more oil that petrol!

Back in the days of the Hillman Minx Rootes reckoned that a car doing 1000 miles to a pint was satisfactory, oil usage above that and it required stripping and new piston rings fitted. (under guarantee)

Ps. the writer of that column is talking American quarts.

1 UK quart = 1.2 US quarts.
