Can get even worse here - cars imported to Spain get re-registered (put on Spanish plates) and the date this is done can oddly become the 'date of first registration'. Means that an elderly car is not subject to regular Testing for 3-4 years, as it is regarded as 'new'!

We went through a similar phase - which is why my 70 1/2 Camaro was a V-reg BUT, back then, MoT requirement was based on year of manufacture - now something DVSA don't even record anymore (which could be hard on anyone hoping for tax-free "historic" status) - so we MIGHT actually be in the same position with more recent imports.

I remember way back that cars where the original date couldn't be established were given Q plates.

Ps, Just looked that up and apparently it's still the same.

maybe that's why one of the Cranes on Channel 5's "Trucking Hell" is Q plated. Seemed a weird thing to be wearing a 'Q' when I noticed it. Pleasant mindless viewing.

I thought Q plates were generally used for "bitzas" (towards the end, a lot of Morrison milk floats ended up with Q-plates, because having sold the original No. Swansea* could never be satisfied as to the provenance of the donor.)

Not sure how/when it applies now though, because I'm sure I read somewhere that DVLC use the date of 1st registration (possibly here) as the basis for everything - so much simpler than trying to establish date of manufacture!

*on re-reading this, no, I didn't mean Swansea had sold the No: but I'm too tired (& cold) to re-phrase that.

This from the dot gov site:

'Q' registration numbers

DVLA issues ‘Q’ registration numbers to vehicles whose age or identity is in doubt.

If this happens, any original vehicle registration number will become invalid and you must not display it again.

To get a ‘Q’ registration number, your vehicle has to pass a type approval process.

Only the DVLS could have any doubts about the age of a vehicle, presumably because they don't understand VIN's - or can't be bothered to "read" them.

Regardless, I'm sure I didn't imagine reading, quite recently, that they have now lost all interest in the date of manufacture, as it now has no relevance (to them!)

Whatsthisthen?..blue bandit..

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

TRy this one. Wasn't immediately obvious to me but small amount of delving comes up with the goods.

So here it is. You get the full car. On the "Haynes spanner scale" of difficulty 2.5 spanners. Somewhere in between the 2 spanner-fairly easy suitable for the beginner with some experience, and the 3-spanner-fairly difficult suitable for the competant DIY whatsthisthener.
